AUSTIN, Texas, January 10. NO. 16 Texas picked up a pair of diving wins from junior Kathryn Kelly and impressive swims from Susana Escobar, among others, but it wasn't enough, as No. 1 Auburn scored a 157-80 win over the Longhorns Thursday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. <\/p>\n
Kelly (Longwood, Fla.) registered easy victories in the one- and three-meter diving events, scoring 299.40 to win the one-meter event and a career-best 340.50 to decisively win the three-meter event. <\/p>\n
"Kat had a career day on the three meter, but she knows she can do a lot better than that, and that's very promising," said UT diving coach Matt Scoggin. "(UT freshman) Kayla Torske had a nice comeback event in the three-meter. She stumbled on the one but was solid on the three."<\/p>\n
Sophomore Susana Escobar (Queretaro, Mexico) picked up where she left off in the fall, as she clocked 9:49.40 to take second in the 1000 freestyle. Freshman Brie Powers (Kalamazoo, Mich.) took third in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.19 after finishing strong down the stretch. Junior Hee-Jin Chang (Seoul, Korea) added a solid swim in the 50 freestyle, taking second in 23.34. <\/p>\n
"Susana (Escobar) had an outstanding meet, not surprisingly," Texas head swimming coach Kim Brackin said. "We have been setting the bar high for her, and she continues to jump for it. It was great to see the 200 freestyle from Brie Powers and see that desire in those last 25 yards to beat someone. Hee-Jin Chang turned a corner in her training with her confidence level. She truly wants to be a great swimmer."<\/p>\n
Escobar added a second-place finish in the 400 IM in 4:19.49, while junior Alison Soelter (Ulysses, Kan.) took fifth in 4:25.20. <\/p>\n
"We saw a much more mature Alison Soelter, in regard to racing, today," Brackin added. "She had a really nice 400 IM and a great 200 breaststroke."<\/p>\n
Junior Jacqueline Martin-Lacey (Franklin, Tenn.) took second in the 200 butterfly (2:02.70), while Chang, Powers and freshman Adrienne Woods (Dexter, Mich.) added a three-four-five finish in the 100 freestyle. Junior Rebecca Orr (Austin, Texas) took second in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.42, and Escobar chipped in a second-place time of 4:47.26 in the 500 freestyle. <\/p>\n
"I feel that about 90 percent of our team raced well," Brackin concluded. "I'm excited about the attitude of the team and its enthusiasm to race. But, in order to be competitive, we can't be at 90 percent. We need 100 percent of the team on the same page."<\/p>\n
