Breen, an Olympian and former world record holder, reflects on being a distance swimmer during the 1950s and early 60s. He offers insights as to what it was like to swim for Counsilman as the legendary coach first broke into the head coaching ranks. Breen also talks about the single most important invention in swimming – goggles. Without them, Breen said swimmers endured blurry vision and saw color rings around lights for days and months.<\/p>\n

The longest workout then was 6,000 to 6,500 yards – and that was for distance swimmers! You will be amazed when you learn that Breen never used flip turns throughout his career, and the one time he did, Counsilman chastised him for hotdogging!<\/p>\n
