EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, December 7. THE second evening of swimming action at the Dutch Open held in Eindhoven, Netherlands witnessed some strong swims that came ever so close to setting various national records from across the world.<\/p>\n
The middle distance freestyle 400s opened the second night of competition. Romania's Ionela Cozma added the 400 to her 800 victory from the first night with a winning time of 4:12.72. She knocked off second-place finisher Hannah Miley of Great Britain (4:13.60).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ryan Cochrane of Canada took a run at his country's national record in the men's 400 free. Already holding the 800 and 1500 Canadian standards, Cochrane clocked a first-place time of 3:50.78 in the middle distance event, falling short of Andrew Hurd's national record of 3:49.08. David Carry of Great Britain placed second in 3:51.55.<\/p>\n
In the 100 butterfly, Inge Dekker ran down her second title of the meet after claiming the 200 free on the first night. She beat compatriot Chantal Groot, 58.88 to 59.67, to hit the wall first in the event. <\/p>\n
For the men, Portugal's Simao Morgado went after his national record of 53.53 set at the Athens Games, but fell short with a winning readout of 53.89 in the men's 100 fly. He had some company though, as Canadian Joe Bartoch finished second in 53.99.<\/p>\n
Sophie Casson of Great Britain earned a close victory of her own in the women's 200 back as she touched out Canada's Kelly Stefanyshyn, 2:16.25 to 2:16.71. Canada's Caitlin Meredith also helped push Casson with a third-place 2:16.89.<\/p>\n
Germany's record holder in the men's 200 back, Helge Meeuw, finished about two seconds off his standard of 1:56.34, but still won in a quick time of 1:58.59. Canada's Keith Beavers finished behind him with a second-place effort of 1:59.76 \u2013 just a second off his national record of 1:58.64 set by Matt Hawes in March of 2007.<\/p>\n
Another national record withstood a close call as Great Britain's Hannah Miley clipped Canada's Annamay Pierse in the women's 200 IM, 2:14.20 to 2:14.62. Miley's readout came up just short of her own national standard of 2:14.10 set in June of 2007.<\/p>\n
Netherlands' Robin Van Aggele closed out the second night of swimming with a winning effort of 2:02.20 in the men's 200 IM. He defeated Canadian record holder Brian Johns, who took second in 2:03.00.<\/p>\n
