AUSTIN, Texas, December 1. THE final night of swimming at the Texas Invitational came to a close with some fast times posted by the assembled talent.<\/p>\n
In the overall team race, Arizona's women won with 859 points \u2013 ahead of Stanford's 768 and Texas' 493. Texas' men, however, won with 704 points, while Arizona took second with 610.5 points. Longhorn took third with 393 points.<\/p>\n
Women's 1650 freestyle<\/b>
\nTexas' Susana Escobar claimed a close victory over Arizona's Joni Keith in the women's distance event. Escobar touched in 16:22.08, while Keith took second in 16:25.93.<\/p>\n
Texas' Macie Garrett finished third in 16:30.57, while Wisconsin's Gabby Maddalena touched fourth in 16:34.07.<\/p>\n
Men's 1650 freestyle<\/b>
\nMichael Klueh broke a 13-year-old University of Texas record with an incredible effort of 14:41.83 to win the event. The performance broke Matt Hooper's previous standard of 14:42.02 set at the 1994 NCAA Championships and was the second-oldest record on the books for the Longhorns.<\/p>\n
Hooper knew the record-breaking was inevitable though when contacted about Klueh's performance. Klueh had previously broken Hooper's high school state record in the 500, so Hooper knew the possibility was coming. Hooper currently works with the American Swim Coaches Association in Florida.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, CJ Nuess of Arizona State claimed second in 15:01.63, while UNLV's Kier Maitland placed third in 15:04.71.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 backstroke<\/b>
\nIn the bragging rights between the Texas Invite and the USA Short Course Championships, Kirsty Coventry scored one for Texas with a swift time of 1:50.39 that surpassed Margaret Hoelzer's title-winning time of 1:51.68.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Julia Smit placed second in 1:54.39, while Arizona's Caitlin Iversen closed out the top three in 1:55.76.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 backstroke<\/b>
\nWith Ryan Lochte breaking the American record in Atlanta with a 1:36.81, Aaron Peirsol was hard-pressed to counter that effort and settled for a first-place time of 1:39.10. <\/p>\n
Arizona freshman Cory Chitwood, who was a National Club Swimming Association All-American last year, continued an amazing rookie year with second place in 1:43.15, while beating teammate Albert Subirats, who took third in 1:43.21.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 freestyle<\/b>
\nIn another event where Atlanta owned bragging rights as Natalie Coughlin clocked an American record time of 46.85, Stanford's Brooke Bishop had to be happy with some Pacific 10 bragging rights when she beat a pair of Arizona Wildcats. <\/p>\n
Bishop hit the wall in 48.70, while Taylor Baughman (49.13) and Courtney Cashion (49.17) completed the top three with second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 freestyle<\/b>
\nAfter tying with Sun Devil Nick Brunelli in the 50 free, Tucson Ford's Roland Schoeman would have no more of that as he blazed to a winning time of 41.91. Better than not only Brunelli's second-place 42.45, but also Cesar Cielo's time of 42.11 in Atlanta.<\/p>\n
Ian Crocker of Longhorn rounded out the top three with a time of 42.48 to lead a bunch of Longhorn teammates in the championship heat.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 breaststroke<\/b>
\nIn another Pac 10 battle, Stanford's Caroline Bruce came out on top of Arizona's Annie Chandler. Bruce touched in 2:11.53, while Chandler finished just behind in 2:11.62.<\/p>\n
Arizona's Jacquelyn Craft garnered the final medal of the event with a third-place time of 2:13.29.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 breaststroke<\/b>
\nBrendan Hansen posted the fastest time of the weekend with a stellar time of 1:52.81, well ahead of not only second-place finisher Adam Ritter's 1:54.75 in Texas, but also Vlad Polyakov's swim of 1:54.52 to win the B final in Atlanta after being relegated due to his international status.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Tennessee's Andrew Bree won his own close call against Arizona's Bart Steninger and Stanford's Nate Cass. Bree touched in 1:56.62 to beat the 1:56.81 and 1:56.86 times posted by the other two swimmers, respectively. <\/p>\n
Women's 200 butterfly<\/b>
\nStanford's Elaine Breeden cruised to victory in the women's 200 fly when she hit the wall in 1:54.11.<\/p>\n
Dana Kirk, meanwhile, grabbed second place when she stopped the clock in 1:56.05, while Tucson Ford's Whitney Myers finished third in 1:58.57.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 butterfly<\/b>
\nTucson Ford's Juan Veloz clocked a quick time of 1:43.70 to win the title, while Texas' Ricky Berens became UT's second-fastest performer all time with a 1:44.06, which is also UT's seventh-best time in school history.<\/p>\n
Tennessee's Michael Wolfe, meanwhile, pocketed third-place honors with a time of 1:44.76.<\/p>\n
Relay Results<\/b>
\nStanford's team of Kate Dwelley, Julia Smit, Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy and Brooke Bishop won the women's 400 free relay in 3:15.29, while Tennessee's team of Octavio Alesi, Jonas Persson, Nolan Morrell and Barry Murphy took home the men's title in 2:51.82.<\/p>\n
Diving Results<\/b>
