LANCASTER, Pennsylvania, December 1. FRANKLIN & Marshall's men's swimming team is in second place amongst nine teams, while the women are in third amongst the ten teams competing at this weekend's Franklin & Marshall Invitational. Kutztown leads the women's field, while Rowan sits in first place in the men's competition with a 42-point lead on F&M after 12 events. <\/p>\n
The Diplomats grabbed first place points in two races on the women's side in the evening session, while the men took first in two events this evening. That effort, combined with the morning session gave Franklin & Marshall's men first place points in four events on the day. <\/p>\n
Matt Jaffee and Matt Young swept first and second in the 100-yard backstroke. Jaffee clocked a 53.82, while Young touched at 54.06. Greg Mackinnon gave the Diplomats three swimmers in the top five in the race by finishing fifth. Conor Finnegan picked up five team points with a 12th place finish. <\/p>\n
Tom Grabiak picked up the first place points for the men in the evening session with a 59.02 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He was the only competitor to finish the race in less than a minute. Dan Kritzer, Michael Brocenos and Alex Raup all finished in the points in the event. <\/p>\n
Derek Nowak won the 500-yard freestyle by nearly eight seconds, swimming to a 4:43.64 for 20 team points. A pair of Kutztown swimmers followed Nowak in, with Golden Bears frosh Nick Williams touching second at 4:51.02. Nowak also took second in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:17.49. Dan Vogel contributed team points with a seventh place finish in the race. <\/p>\n
Jaffee, Grabiak, Val Perfanov, and Phil Rehders also combined for first place points, winning the 400-yard medley relay in 3:32.59. They scraped out a victory over Rowan's entry, which logged a 3:33.50. <\/p>\n
MacKinnon, Grabiak, Perfanov, and Rehders logged a 1:37.55 in the 200-medley relay to finish second, less than a tick behind Rowan's entry. Perfanov finished second in the 100-yard fly with a 52.63, .57 seconds behind Rowan's Kevin Wallace. Rehders added sixth place points for F&M, while freshman J.T. Cavey took seventh in the race. <\/p>\n
Peter Fishler finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.51. John Kelly placed eighth for the Diplomats. Fishler joined with Perfanov, Young and Nowak for third place in the 800-yard free relay with a 7:10.83 <\/p>\n
Franklin & Marshall's women entered the evening in fifth place, but racked up major team points in the evening's second event, the 400-yard individual medley. Freshman Laura Bassford posted nearly a two-second win on the field with a 4:46.76. Classmate, Emily Zacherl clocked in at 4:58.73 for fourth place points, while Alexandra Jenal and Kim Greenfield grabbed sixth and seventh respectively. The 60 team-points scored moved the Diplomats up into third place after the race. They held the position for the remainder of the evening. <\/p>\n
Brittany McCabe placed first in the 100-yard backstroke swimming to a 59.52 in the backstroke. Her time meets the NCAA "B-Cut" standard, and made her the only swimmer to come in under a minute. Lucia Parry, Denie Kossuth, and Maureen McCluskey all finished the race in the points. <\/p>\n
McCabe also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:00.52. Swarthmore's Anne Miller grabbed first in the race at 58.94. F&M's Jennie Payne posted a 1:02.38 for sixth place points. <\/p>\n
McCabe, Bassford, Payne and Parry combined for third place in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:54.21, while Payne, Meghan Karanian, Bassford and Zacherl took fifth in the 800-yard free relay with a time of 8:18.97. <\/p>\n
