Summer Sanders Olympic Pool \u2013 Roseville, CA<\/p>\n
\tRoseville, CA\u2014United States women\u2019s water polo received a shot in the arm
\nback on July 9, 2000 with Team USA emerging victorious in the 2000 Holiday
\nCup. The tournament, which featured all six teams that will be competing in
\nSydney this summer, established the U.S. as a viable gold-medal contender in
\nthese, the first Olympics to include women\u2019s water polo as a team sport.
\n\tNow, less than a month later, its time for a booster.<\/p>\n
\tWhile no National Team members will be in attendance, this weekend\u2019s
\nWomen\u2019s Senior National Tournament will suffer no shortage of action. Twelve
\nteams and hundreds of hopefuls, all with their sights trained on Greece in
\n2004, will battle it out over three days for the National Championship, one
\nof the sport\u2019s most prestigious titles.<\/p>\n
\tLauren Faust\u2019s three goals weren\u2019t enough for Navy AC in the opener of the
\nwomen\u2019s Senior Nationals. TRAP held Navy scoreless in the first half and 5-4
\nin the second half en route to the 6-4 win.
\n\tTRAP\u2019s Erin Lezak and Kristina Kunkle scored two goals apiece, while Navy\u2019s
\nLydia Gardner held the edge in the goalkeeper category with six saves.<\/p>\n
\tSunset was able to withstand a fourth-quarter surge by Golden Bear Blue,
\nescaping with a 7-5 win. Blue received goals from Brigitte Donner, Cristen
\nRazzari, and Courtney Devenish in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to
\n6-5, but a goal by Sunset\u2019s Larisa Baltgavis with 51 seconds to play sealed
\nthe deal.
\n\tGolden Bear Blue\u2019s Lauren Dennis had seven saves in the loss.<\/p>\n
\tGolden Bear Cub played Davis tight in every quarter\u2026except one. A four-goal
\nbarrage in the second quarter by Davis made all the difference in its 7-3
\nwin over Golden Bear Cub.
\n\tShort of the defensive breakdown in that quarter, Golden Bear Cub was none
\nthe worse for wear. Cub goalkeeper Lisa Berquist cracked double-digits in
\nthe save column, notching 10 in the loss. Davis\u2019 Tiffany Hodgens was the
\ngame\u2019s only multi-goal scorer with two.<\/p>\n
\tGolden West outscored ORCA 8-0 in the second half of play, on its way to a
\n10-1 win. Four goals in the third quarter and four more in the fourth gave
\nGolden West the biggest margin of victory thus far in pool play.
\n\tGolden West was led by Erika Billish-McCormick\u2019s three goals. Teammate
\nTeresa Gorbett also put up a hat trick with three of her own, two of them
\ncoming in the final quarter of play. Katie Grogan netted two goals for
\nGolden West. Daylene Coberly scored ORCA\u2019s only goal with 2:26 remaining in
\nthe game.<\/p>\n
\tGolden Bear scored three goals in each of the first three quarters in its
\n9-2 win over TRAP on Friday.
\nFive different players got in the score column for Gold, including Massie
\nKeely, who scorched the net for three goals on the day. Teammates Collette
\nGlinskowski and Beth Irwin collected two apiece.
\n\tGolden Bear goalkeepers Fana Fuqua and Kristen McGlennon combined for 12
\nsaves on the day.<\/p>\n
\tA strong first quarter by Santa Barbara paved the way for a 5-4 win over
\nGolden Bear Blue. Blue scored a goal in each quarter, but Santa Barbara\u2019s
\nthree in the first quarter proved to be the difference.
\n\tCassie Nichols scored two goals for Santa Barbara, while Chris Lane scored
\na pair of her own for Golden Bear Blue. Lauren Dennis collected seven saves
\nin the loss for Blue.<\/p>\n
\tIt took Modesto\/Stanislaus\u2019 Margie Dingeldine a quarter to find her groove.
\nBut once she did, she proceeded to score two a quarter, finishing with six
\nin her team\u2019s 10-7 win against Davis.
\n\tDingeldine netted two of her squad\u2019s four goals in the second quarter,
\ngiving Modesto\/Stanislaus a 6-4 lead at the half. The second half brought
\nmore of the same, with Dingeldine scooting two goals in each quarter past
\nDavis goalkeeper Molly Morris.
\n\tDavis\u2019 Tiffany Hodgens had a good showing as well, picking up three saves
\nin the loss.<\/p>\n
\tKatie Grogan\u2019s three goals led a balanced Golden West offensive in a 9-5
\nwin over Stanford. Golden West managed to be one goal better than Stanford
\nin each quarter, 3-2, 2-1, 2-1, and 2-1.
\n\tJocelyn Manderino scored two goals for Golden West, while Ali Riddell (3
\ngoals) and Kelly Shovey (2 goals) accounted for all of Stanford\u2019s offensive
\noutput.<\/p>\n
\tGolden Bear Gold scored 10 goals in the first half en route to a 14-5
\ndismantling of Navy AC.
\n\tJulie Arnold scored four goals and Maggi Kelly scored three for the Bears,
\nwho outscored Navy 6-1 in the second quarter. Lauren Faust posted three
\ngoals for Navy in the loss.<\/p>\n
\tEight different players found the goal for Santa Barbara in its 11-4 win
\nover Sunset. Mary Blumberg led the way with three goals and Elaina Zivich
\nscored two, while six other players scored once.
\n\tSunset goalkeeper Ashley Zabel and her Santa Barbara counterpart Yvonne
\nConard knocked down six shots apiece.<\/p>\n
\tThe Golden Bear Cubs fell to Modesto\/Stanislaus, 7-5, despite a
\ntournament-high 13 stops by goalkeeper Lisa Berquist. Katie Hall picked up
\ntwo goals to lead Modesto\/Stanislaus. Margie Dingeldine, who scored six
\ngoals earlier, cooled off and was one of five other players to score one
\ngoal. Berquist now has 23 saves in two games.<\/p>\n
\tKate Pettit scored five goals in Stanford\u2019s 11-5 victory over ORCA. Ali
\nRiddell and Tiffany O\u2019Ferriell scored two apiece for Stanford in the win.
\n\tOne bright spot for ORCA was Laura Holsehouser, who stopped 11 shots on
\ngoal in the loss.<\/p>\n
National Team Notes:
\n— It\u2019s ironic that this week\u2019s women\u2019s senior and junior National
\nChampionships are being played at the Summer Sanders Olympic Pool. On
\nWednesday, July 26, 2000, the Olympic Swimmer-turned-Today Show personality
\nspent the day in the pool with the women\u2019s National Team in Los Alamitos,
\nCalif. Sparing nothing, Sanders actively took part in the whole of Coach Guy
\nBaker\u2019s Olympic training regiment. From a spectator\u2019s point of view, Sanders
\nappeared to hold her own. Sanders, however, would tell you otherwise.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was completely wiped,\u201d she said, her 6 a.m. smile worn with fatigue.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time since I\u2019ve swam and it shows. Water polo is much more
\ntiring than just swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n
After her team work, Sanders spent some time going one-on-one with Olympic
\nteam captain Julie Swail, learning some of the finer nuances of the sport,
\nincluding what it\u2019s like to take an elbow in the ribs. Swail, demonstrating
\nhow to get away from an opponent, wrapped Sanders under the armpit, catching
\nher with an elbow. Sanders, demonstrating remarkable journalistic restraint,
\nhad little more to say than \u201couch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Once she had toweled off, Sanders sat poolside for an interview with rising
\nstar Brenda Villa. Her day was concluded with hugs and smiles and you can
\nbet it was followed immediately by a deep coma-like nap.<\/p>\n
The show, which will be a part of the Today Show\u2019s Olympic lineup as the
