AUSTIN, Texas, November 30. THE second day of the Texas Invitational opened up with competition in the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. That preliminary competition set up some world-class match ups for the evening session.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 IM<\/b>
\nArizona demonstrated some quality depth in the event with a 1-2-3-4 finish in prelims. Carley Beaudreau hit the wall first in 4:15.54, while Jenny Forster placed second in 4:16.30. Caitlin Iversen (4:17.17) and Kathryn Thompson (4:18.72) completed the sweep with third and fourth-place finishes.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Julia Smit (4:19.22) and Liz Smith (4:21.47) finished fifth and sixth, while Texas' Susana Escobar (4:22.85) and Wisconsin's Elizabeth Brooks (4:23.98) completed the top eight.<\/p>\n
Men's 400 IM<\/b>
\nIn another intra-state battle, CJ Nuess of Arizona State and Jack Brown of Arizona will go head-to-head tonight for the title. Nuess topped qualifying in 3:49.51, while Brown placed second in 3:49.66.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford's Juan Veloz took third in 3:50.43, while Texas' Michael Klueh finished fourth in 3:50.85.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Scott Lathrope (3:53.13) and Josh Charnin-Aker (3:53.38) finished fifth and sixth, while Texas' Caleb McDermott (3:53.92) and Brian Collins (3:53.98) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 freestyle<\/b>
\nLonghorn's Tanica Jamison posted the fastest time of the morning with a time of 1:46.04, while Arizona's Taylor Baughman finished second in 1:47.24.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Kate Dwelley (1:47.33) and Brooke Bishop (1:47.42) took third and fourth, while Arizona State's Jen Beckberger (1:47.68) and Arizona's Leone Vorster (1:48.11) touched fifth and sixth.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford's Whitney Myers (1:48.15) and Wisconsin's Jenni Illescas (1:48.29) comprised the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 freestyle<\/b>
\nA trio of swimmers will be gunning for Simon Burnett's U.S. Open record of 1:31.20 in the men's 200 free as Arizona's Jean Basson (1:34.08) and Darian Townsend (1:34.39) each posted some quick times in prelims, joined by Andy Grant's third-place 1:34.62.<\/p>\n
Texas claimed the next three spots with times from David Cromwell (1:35.32), Dave Walters (1:35.40) and Ian Crocker (1:35.44). Meanwhile, Tucson Ford's Adam Ritter (135.46) and Tennessee's Nolan Morrell (1:35.48) took care of the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 breaststroke<\/b>
\nWith Jessica Hardy going sub-1:00 over in Atlanta today, Tara Kirk may have some work to do to protect her American record time of 57.77 by lowering it even further. Kirk, however, topped prelims with a time of 1:00.60, while Arizona's Annie Chandler clocked a second-place 1:00.74.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Caroline Bruce (1:02.43), Arizona's Jacquelyn Craft (1:02.64) and Jessica Embick (1:02.96) all finished in the 1:02 range, while Stanford's Kerry Kraemer (1:03.38) and Liz Smith (1:03.41) as well as UNLV's Kim Bonney (1:03.86) finished the top eight in the 1:03s.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 breaststroke<\/b>
\nAs potentially the main reason why Brendan Hansen is on a mini-taper this weekend, Hansen will have his eyes set on Mike Alexandrov's American record time of 51.56 when Hansen enters finals as the top seed. It would give Hansen a sweep of the yard times as he already owns both the long course meter records in the breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Hansen touched in 53.47 to lead qualifying, while Arizona's Bart Steninger (54.28) and Marcus Titus (54.51) placed second and third.<\/p>\n
SMU's Alex Hetland (54.66), Arizona's Ivan Barnes (54.76) and Tennessee's Andrew Bree (54.95) clocked in 54s for fourth through sixth, while Stanford's Paul Kornfeld (55.03) and Texas' Matt Lowe (55.20) touched seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 backstroke<\/b>
\nArizona claimed five of the top eight spots in the championship heat with a dominant display in the 100 back. Hailey DeGolia (53.42), Ana Agy (54.24), Justine Schluntz (54.47) and Andrea Boritzke (54.77) swept the top four spots, while Jenny Forster (55.20) provided the bookend with eighth place.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Kelley Hug (54.84), Arizona State's Caitlin Andrew (55.08) and Tucson Ford's Whitney Myers (55.10) touched fifth through seventh.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 backstroke<\/b>
\nIn what shaped up to be a star-studded championship final, Albert Subirats qualified first in 47.10, while top backstroker Aaron Peirsol finished second in 47.16 with teammate Ian Crocker finishing third in 47.59.<\/p>\n
