WITH a tapered Ryan Lochte looking to relive one off his greatest yard meets from the 2006 NCAA Championships, which also took place in Atlanta, fans are in for a show tonight after day one of prelims at the USA Short Course National Championships held in Atlanta, Ga.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 500 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nEight swimmers put themselves into position to take a run at Kate Ziegler&#39;s American record of 4:33.35 set in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Mary DeScenza topped qualifying with a time of 4:41.93, while Katie Carroll finished second in 4:42.74.  Alyssa Anderson, who will be attending the University of Arizona next year, finished third in 4:44.44, while Erin Reilly placed fourth in 4:45.77.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Blackman (4:45.79), Cammile Adams (4:46.02), Caroline Burckle (4:46.02) and Carly Piper (4:46.03) completed the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascyw500freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 500 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nPeter Vanderkaay and Larsen Jensen will look to put on a show during finals after the duo posted 4:17s in prelims.  Vanderkaay, who owns the American record with a 4:08.60 from 2006, paced qualifying with a time of 4:17.21.  Jensen, meanwhile, touched in 4:17.32 as the pair battled side-by-side in heat nine.<\/p>\n<p>Davis Tarwater (4:19.89) and Erik Vendt (4:19.94) both dipped under 4:20 for third and fourth, respectively, while Fran Crippen (4:20.80), Jayme Cramer (4:20.93), Balazs Gercsak (4:21.80) and Robert Margalis (4:22.14) comprised the rest of the championship heat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascym500freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nThe championship finalists in the women&#39;s 200 IM will be gunning for Maggie Bowen&#39;s American record time of 1:53.91.<\/p>\n<p>Ava Ohlgren led qualifying with a time of 1:57.63, while Kathleen Hersey, who is heading to Texas next year, touched in 1:58.20.  Mary Beck, the reigning <i>Swimming World Magazine<\/i> High School Swimmer of the Year, took third in 1:58.64, while Kaitlin Sandeno clocked a 1:59.42 for fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Spindrift Beck, who recently broke a national high school record in the 100 breast, also tied for fourth in 1:59.42, while Emily Silver turned in a sixth-place 1:59.77.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten Smith (2:00.52) and Margaret Hoelzer (2:00.72) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascyw200IMp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nIn what should be a barn-burner this evening, a reportedly shaved Ryan Lochte dropped a 1:43.84 in prelims in the pool he set the American record with a 1:40.55 in 2006.  Michael Phelps, who is testing his wrist for the first time in competition, placed second in 1:45.31.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Shanteau (1:45.68), Doug Van Wie (1:46.17) and James Wike (1:46.18) took third through fifth in prelims, while John Dorr (1:46.22), Mike Alexandrov (1:46.25) and Adam Mania (1:46.72) rounded out the championship heat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascym200IMp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nKara Lynn Joyce&#39;s American record of 21.63 will be up for grabs in the championship heat tonight as Natalie Coughlin, fresh off a strong showing in the FINA World Cup circuit, clocked the quickest time of the morning with a 21.93.  Meanwhile, Amanda Weir dropped a 21.97 to tie Joyce&#39;s matching mark from the morning session.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Komisarz (22.24), Jessica Hardy (22.45) and Samantha Woodward (22.58), Carrie Ellis (22.66) and Ava Ohlgren (22.71) made up the rest of the A final.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascyw50freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 50 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nIn the quickest event in the sport, Ryan Lochte emerged with the top prelim time in the men&#39;s sprint free when he touched in a time of 19.22.  He, along with the rest of the championship heat, will be chasing the U.S. Open record of Cesar Cielo (18.69) and Ben Wildman-Tobriner&#39;s American record (18.87).<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, both Cielo and Wildman-Tobriner missed out on finals as Cielo placed 10th in 19.94 and Wildman-Tobriner took 12th in 19.99. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Jason Lezak (19.40) and Cullen Jones (19.56) will look to chase down Lochte, who apparently is tapered for this meet.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Lundquist (19.58), Jonathon Newton (19.61), Matt Grevers (19.67), Nathan Adrian (19.67) and Fred Bousquet (19.73) make up the rest of the top eight finalists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/11292007usascym50freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ATLANTA, Georgia, November 29.
