In reality, even the fastest swimmers have technique limitations, but they offset them with strength and conditioning. The purpose of this series of articles is to address scientifically the technique misconceptions that have become \u201cconventional wisdom,\u201d and to present options that are more effective.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 13\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In the second part of a two-part series on arm coordination, Dr. Rod Havriluk discusses the importance of Index of Coordination (IdC) and how a higher, or positive, IdC is ultimately needed for success. A negative IdC arm coordination (i.e., catch-up)\u00a0is very common and also very natural, particularly when fatigued. However, a swimmer cannot maximize velocity with a negative IdC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dr. Rod Havriluk is a sports scientist and consultant who specializes in swimming technique instruction and analysis.
