john John K. Williams, Jr.\u00a0<\/strong>recently passed away. Williams, who suffered cerebral palsy his entire life, was an active member on the International Swimming Hall of Fame board and dedicated much of his life to Adaptive Aquatics.<\/p>\n

The following obituary was submitted by ISHOF:<\/p>\n

It is with great sadness that we announce the of passing John K Williams Jr.<\/strong>, after a lifetime of service to Adaptive Aquatics and the disabled community.<\/p>\n

John was born May 12, 1945, a third generation San Diegan. At birth his brain was\u00a0deprived of oxygen, leaving his intelligence intact but interfering with his nervous system so that\u00a0he had diminished control of his muscles. His condition, cerebral palsy, was a challenge all his\u00a0life, limiting his mobility and speech. However, John never allowed his challenges to define him.\u00a0He believed that his purpose in life was to be a role model for others. His motto was \u201cbe happy,\u00a0if I can be, so can you\u201d. In his 20\u2019s he was proprietor of a book store. He also learned to swim in\u00a0a time when no one thought this was possible for\u00a0a person with Cerebral Palsy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, I was afraid of water,\u201d Williams\u00a0said. \u201cI would not go into water more than two or\u00a0three feet deep so I could get around on my\u00a0hands and and knees, as I was afraid of falling. I\u00a0soon found that even if I did fall, the water would\u00a0help pick me up and I could stand by myself.\u00a0The water was a stabilizing force that made it\u00a0easy for me to keep my balance and move around\u00a0the pool – I could walk! I could dance! I could\u00a0stand on one foot – It was like flying! My\u00a0movements in the water were much smoother\u00a0than on land, so they were easier and less\u00a0frustrating and the more I did the more I wanted\u00a0to do. I began to get a sense of accomplishment.\u00a0Then I learned about the benefits of physical\u00a0fitness. As I walked more in the water, I\u00a0could go farther and farther, and as I did\u00a0more, my heart rate went down. I got a\u00a0greater range of motion, more flexibility, and could sleep better.”<\/p>\n

John wanted to share his experience. In 1978, Louise Priest<\/strong>, who was the Director of\u00a0Adapted Aquatics for the American Red Cross, invited him to attend a meeting of the Council\u00a0for National Cooperation in Aquatics, which was being held in San Diego, and John became\u00a0active in the adaptive aquatics movement. In his 50\u2019s John graduated from college, a lifetime goal of his, first from San Diego Mesa College and then from San Diego State College with a\u00a0BA in recreational management. In 1993, the International Swimming Hall of Fame created\u00a0an\u00a0award to honor the person who made the greatest contribution to adaptive aquatics each year.\u00a0John was the first recipient and thereafter the award was named the \u201cJohn K. Williams, Jr.\u00a0International Adapted Aquatics Award.\u201d He was an active member of ISHOF\u2019s Advisory\u00a0Board until recently and since 2013, the award has been sponsored by S. R. Smith.<\/p>\n

\u201cS.R. Smith has been honored to\u00a0present this award on behalf of John and his\u00a0life\u2019s work of sharing his love of swimming,\u201d\u00a0says Dan Jorgensen<\/strong>, VP of S.R. Smith. \u201cHe\u00a0was an instrumental leader promoting the\u00a0benefits of water therapy and creating pool access for all individuals.”<\/p>\n

John was the author and the subject of many articles in the field of adaptive aquatics and\u00a0a long time volunteer at Camp Able in Coronado. He was a role model, mentor and friend to all\u00a0who knew him. John is survived by his brother Grant Williams and Grants wife Barbara;\u00a0nephews Mike and Brinton Williams and Brinton\u2019s wife Eva, and Cousins Keith and Marylyn\u00a0Robinson and their extended family.<\/p>\n

A celebration of John\u2019s life will be held December 14 at 6PM in party room 1 of the\u00a0Promenade at Rio Vista apartments, 2185 Station Village Way, San Diego. Contributions to the\u00a0San Diego Chapter of United Cerebral Palsy Society are requested in lieu of flowers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
