WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, November 17. PURDUE'S men's and women's swimming and diving teams stand in second and fourth place, respectively, following two full days of competition at the Purdue Invitational. <\/p>\n
The Boilermaker men are engaged in a two-team race for the invitational title, trailing Missouri by 44 points, 480-436. <\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers have all but clinched the women's team title, leading second-place Louisville by 106 points, 520-414. The Boilermaker women are chasing Florida for third place, 399-394. <\/p>\n
Also competing at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center this weekend are teams from Southern Illinois and Missouri State, plus divers from Stanford. <\/p>\n
The night's top highlight was the performance of former Louisville Cardinal Rachel Komisarz, competing unattached in the 100-yard butterfly. Komisarz recorded a time of 51.44, which shattered the previous Doris Z. Holloway pool record of 52.11 set by Georgia's Mary DeScenza at the 2005 NCAA Women's Championships. <\/p>\n
As for the Boilermakers, their lone win was posted by Andrew Langenfeld in the 100 fly. The West Virginia-transfer recorded an NCAA provisional and season best time of 48.44. <\/p>\n
The top finisher on the women's side was junior diver Emily Wetzel, who scored 256.60 points on the 1-meter springboard, placing behind the Cardinal's Margaret Hostage with 272.90 points. <\/p>\n
The Boilermaker women showcased their depth in Saturday's events despite not securing a victory. Lauren Hyman and Morgan Lebsack were fourth and fifth in the 100 fly; Leah Henninger and Nicole Weatherman placed among the top eight in the 200 free, and Jennifer Lavers and Leah Pierce were third and eighth in the 100 breaststroke. <\/p>\n
Freshman Allie Smith was third in the 100 backstroke at 56.41, just missing a provisional cut by .40 seconds. The Green Bay, Wis., native also led off the third-place 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:45.20. Smith's 50-yard leadoff split was timed at 26.80 – second fastest of the night. <\/p>\n
The Boilermaker men would be a couple points closer to Missouri in the standings if not for two heartbreaking relay results. Purdue's 200 medley relay finished as the runner-up to Missouri State, 1:30.77 to 1:30.78; and its 800 free relay lost to Missouri by .03 seconds, 6:39.97 to 6:40.00. <\/p>\n
Purdue's best event was the 100 fly led by Langenfeld. Three other Boilermakers also scored among the top eight: Sam Wilcher (49.46), Jon Ranochak (49.69) and Jin-Soo Kim (50.33). <\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Andre Koop and Luke Zehrung were third and seventh in the 400 individual medley; John Schmitt and Craig Thompson placed third and sixth in the 200 free, and Aaron Koger and Kim finished fifth and seventh in the 100 breast. <\/p>\n
Freshman Christopher Pfaff was the Boilermakers' lone scorer in the 100 back, coming in sixth at 51.35. <\/p>\n
The Purdue Invitational wraps up Sunday. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals start at 4 p.m. Admission is free. <\/p>\n
