Global water instinct brand arena is once again proud to be an Official Sponsor\u00a0of the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships to be held in Netanya,\u00a0Israel from 2-6 December, 2015. Athletes from 52 nations will descend\u00a0on the popular resort city \u2013 known as the Riviera of Israel \u2013 which will host the\u00a018th edition of the Championships in the brand new swimming complex of the\u00a0Wingate Institute. Among the contestants will be a strong contingent from arena\u2019s\u00a0Elite Team, including Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m<\/strong> (50 & 100m butterfly defending champion),\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> (50 & 100m freestyle defending champion), Adam\u00a0Peaty<\/strong>, Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong>, Katinka Hossz\u00fa<\/strong> (200m IM defending champion),<\/p>\n

Two years ago you had your best-ever Euro SC Championships in Herning,\u00a0with 2 golds, 3 silvers & a bronze. What are your goals for the Championships<\/strong>
\nthis year, and what individual events are you targeting for Netanya?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I will swim 50 & 100 fly and freestyle, and maybe 1-2 relays (although I\u2019m\u00a0not sure if we\u2019ll have enough swimmers for them). My goal is 3-4 medals\u00a0in my individual races, and to swim faster than I did in Herning and Doha.<\/p>\n

2014 and 2015 produced a number of career highlights, with your best ever\u00a0World LC, World SC and European Championship results, along with 5\u00a0new world records. How do you plan to continue performing at this level,\u00a0and being able to peak at the 2016 Olympics in Rio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My plan is to still have fun, enjoy this moment, stay healthy and try to\u00a0swim faster and smarter both in training and competition.<\/p>\n

Despite setting a new 200 freestyle world record in Doha last year and\u00a0consistently performing at the highest level in this event for several years,\u00a0more recently your focus seems to have shifted to the freestyle sprints (50\u00a0& 100). Should we expect this focus to continue as you build to Rio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My main focus in Rio will be 100 fly and 200 free (the first 4 days). But I\u00a0will also swim 50 & 100 free, and all the relays.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve had a lot of success at the European SC Championships over the years,\u00a0and you\u2019re the defending 50 & 100 freestyle champion from Herning in 2013.\u00a0What are your goals for the Championships, and how does Netanya fit into your\u00a0overall preparations for Rio in 2016?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Europeans short course fit really well into my program, even though it\u2019s\u00a0short course. I\u2019m focusing on short course until December because I really enjoy\u00a0it. My personal goals are to swim personal bests.<\/p>\n

Over the past 18 months you\u2019ve been through a number of changes on the\u00a0coaching front. How has this affected your training, and where are you now in\u00a0terms of your preparations for Rio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since June 2014 I\u2019ve been working with my current coach, Patrick. With him I\u2019m\u00a0back on the Road to Rio, and he has brought the pleasure back to my swimming.<\/p>\n

You have not swum at the European Long Course Championships since 2008. Do\u00a0you plan on competing in London in May, 2016?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes! I missed the 2010 EC because of meningitis, chose to skip the 2012 EC because\u00a0of the Olympics, and then the 2014 because I needed to re-schedule my\u00a0training program. So I\u2019m really looking forward to finally swimming Europeans
\nagain and competing in the London pool again!<\/p>\n

Given the meteoric rise of your career over the past 15 months, it\u2019s hard to believe\u00a0that 2 years ago at the Euro SC Championships in Herning, you only made\u00a0one semi-final in your 3 individual breaststroke events. Can you remember how\u00a0you felt after those Championships, where your career was at the time, and\u00a0where you thought it was headed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes I remember distinctively that I was extremely nervous and saw it as a much\u00a0bigger event than it was in the scheme of things. I was kind of in a transition\u00a0stage, just wanting to make the Commonwealth team instead of wanting\/\u00a0thinking to win gold but really enjoyed the meet there!<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow started a keen rivalry between you\u00a0and Cameron Van Der Burgh, and since then you seem to have gained the upper\u00a0hand. How important is this rivalry in motivating you, and keeping you focused\u00a0on the number one prize \u2013 an Olympic gold?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think the rivalry is good for the sport as most people want to see something\u00a0close and exciting, I think winning by a large amount is boring to look at; so I\u00a0kind of know that I\u2019ve got to make every session count and keep my eyes on the\u00a0Olympics.<\/p>\n

Despite your rivalry with Cameron in the 50m pool, you were both beaten\u00a0to the wall in the 50 & 100 breast by Felipe Silva at last year\u2019s World SC\u00a0Championships in Doha. How different is racing in the 25m pool, and how\u00a0will you measure your overall progress towards Rio from your performance\u00a0in Netanya?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think racing short course is a different game as you don\u2019t have to be as\u00a0fit but can get away with power and speed around and off the walls, not\u00a0much like long course. I will be using European Short Course as a training\u00a0meet and seeing where I can pick up gains on every aspect of my races!<\/p>\n

In a race like the 1500, you will do 30 more turns in a 25m pool than a 50m\u00a0pool, which clearly makes it a different race tactically. How can you use\u00a0your performance in a SC pool to gauge your progress towards something\u00a0like the Olympics in a 50m pool?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll use different tactics, because that would distract me from\u00a0my training plans, which are focused on racing 1500m in a 50m pool.\u00a0Turns have never been my strong point, but over time I\u2019ve tried to improve\u00a0their efficiency. It\u2019s true that I\u2019ll have to deal with many more, but\u00a0I\u2019ll approach it in a way that the 25m pool is not an obstacle. As always,\u00a0I\u2019ll tackle the race with great commitment but also a bit of fun.<\/p>\n

2014 and 2015 have been phenomenal years for you, with the World 1500\u00a0LC & SC titles, the 800-1500 Euro double in Berlin, and two sub-14:40 European\u00a0records. After your first Olympics in 2012 \u2013 where you finished fifth in\u00a0just over 14:50 \u2013 did you expect your career & your performances to have\u00a0advanced as quickly as it has?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking back, I can\u2019t deny there\u2019s been very significant and promising\u00a0progress. But I have to be honest: I\u2019ve always swum to achieve these\u00a0kinds of result, without losing sight of my goals. When I prepare for a\u00a0race, I\u2019ll grind out 18km a day and try to rest without needlessly dissipating\u00a0energy. I\u2019ll continue to give my best and never leave anything to\u00a0chance in my preparation. This will help me to move forward with the\u00a0right concentration.<\/p>\n

Your signature event \u2013 100 fly \u2013 is one of the most competitive in men\u2019s swimming,\u00a0and with Michael Phelps returning, it\u2019s only getting more competitive.\u00a0How do you approach your training & competition in order to try & get on the\u00a0podium?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that 100 fly has become extremely tough with many top athletes\u00a0competing, and Michael\u2019s return will add another dimension to this race. We\u00a0started preparations for Rio two months ago, doing a lot of swimming with
\nmany kilometres at the beginning, but I think that was the part I needed to improve\u00a0on the most. We\u2019ll continue with this plan after the winter season, which\u00a0is extremely busy this year with almost a whole month of competition ahead,\u00a0before coming back home for Christmas.<\/p>\n

After your 50 free success in Berlin in 2014, will you be swimming this event in\u00a0Netanya, and training in 2016 in the hope of qualifying for the Olympic 50 free in\u00a0Rio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, I like 50 free. I\u2019m not always able to prepare for it because of the event\u00a0schedule, but those of Berlin and Netanya have given me that opportunity. My\u00a0goal is to qualify in 50 free for the Olympics in Rio, but whether I\u2019ll actually be\u00a0able to compete will only be decided closer to the event.<\/p>\n

How has training outside Poland \u2013 with Bartosz Kizierowski in Madrid \u2013 affected\u00a0your career and your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been working together for eight years now and it\u2019s been an extremely\u00a0successful collaboration, especially this season. We had a discussion after the\u00a0World Championships in Kazan, which helped us to set priorities and goals.
\nBartek is my trainer and my friend, I have the highest respect and confidence in\u00a0him. He is resolute and exacting in training, but alwaysready to have a regular\u00a0guy-to-guy chat afterwards. Throughout my career he\u2019s taught me to have a
\nprofessional approach to sport and shared many technical elements essential\u00a0for good swimming. But he\u2019s also been there for me in my private life, helping\u00a0me like an old friend.<\/p>\n

How do you feel after your break in 2013 and your return to top-level swimming\u00a0in 2014?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It feels great and I\u2019m really excited about the upcoming season. The break was\u00a0not that easy to handle, but I\u2019m glad that I could get through it.<\/p>\n

What events will you be swimming in Netanya and what are your goals for the\u00a0Championships?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m looking forward to swimming 200 & 400 freestyle. I wanted to swim an international\u00a0competition atthe end ofthe year, and my goal is to be faster than\u00a0I was at nationals in Wuppertal.<\/p>\n
