{"id":162294,"date":"2015-11-27T06:44:25","date_gmt":"2015-11-27T13:44:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=162294"},"modified":"2015-11-27T07:33:05","modified_gmt":"2015-11-27T14:33:05","slug":"uncut-race-video-mitch-larkin-breaks-146-to-set-200-back-world-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uncut-race-video-mitch-larkin-breaks-146-to-set-200-back-world-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Race Video: Mitch Larkin Breaks 1:46 to Set 200 Back World Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> became the first Australian to break a world record in six years with his sizzling swim in the men&#8217;s 200-meter backstroke at the 2015 Australian Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Australia has provided the following uncut video of the amazing swim.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mitch Larkin 200 Back World Record Video (1:45.63)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PRwHAsEpgEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Swimming Australia 200 Back World Record Report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It took only 1:45.63 for <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> to become Swimming Australia\u2019s first individual world record holder in six years at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre <span data-term=\"goog_1030074710\">tonight<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old from Brisbane unleashed a dream swim in the 200m backstroke on a record breaking night three at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championships which saw one World, two Australian, two Commonwealth and five Australian All-Comers records fall.<\/p>\n<p>Many swimming pundits were quick to describe the night as a return to the glory days.<\/p>\n<p>Larkin capped off what he described as \u201can amazing 12 months\u201d with his first world record to go alongside his three world championships and a whirlwind record-breaking World Cup series.<\/p>\n<p>He is now without a doubt the hottest backstroker in the world \u2013 with number one world rankings in both the 100 and 200m long course and 100 and 200m short course and a swag of records to boot.<\/p>\n<p>Larkin was at his silky smooth best through the first 50 metres in 24.46 and when he turned in 51.35 at the 100m mark the world record of 1:46.11 set by Russia\u2019s Arkady Vyatchanin in the \u201csupersuit\u201d year of 2009 was very much under fire.<\/p>\n<p>He continued to open up a commanding lead with superb underwater skills on every turn to split 1:18.42, coming home over the final 50m in 27.21.<\/p>\n<p>The last world record set by an Australian was by <strong>Christian Sprenger<\/strong> in the 200m breaststroke at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>The last world records set in Australia were back in 2008 to <strong>Eamon Sullivan<\/strong>, <strong>Libby Trickett<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Rice<\/strong> at the Olympic trials, all at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre \u2013 dubbed the \u201cPool of Dreams\u201d through the 1999 Pan Pacs and 2000 Olympics and 2004 and 2008 Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p>The very much down-to-earth, considered Larkin was excited with his swim but still measured in his thoughtful answers with the media straight after his swim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan is always to improve,\u201d said Larkin, \u201cThis morning was cruisey and I said I would be happy with a <span data-term=\"goog_1030074711\">1:46<\/span> really, really low and if things went really well a 1:45.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think I was that quick <span data-term=\"goog_1030074713\">tonight<\/span>; some of my turns were a little bit out and I didn\u2019t really hit all of them but I\u2019m really happy with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look back on the year and you think did that really happen in six months? It\u2019s just amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked my coach <strong>Michael Bohl<\/strong> what have I done differently? How am I swimming that fast now?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe attributes that to a bit of confidence and I got that from Kazan at the World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something you always dream of and I\u2019m in a bit of shock to be honest. To finally realise that I\u2019ve done it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is short course and I would really like a long course world record but there are steps to that and it\u2019s a major goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible, hopefully the ball keeps rolling and on to Rio and maybe a couple of years after that as
