Each\u00a0year\u00a0Swimming World Magazine<\/em>\u00a0selects the top male and female swimmers for the following regions: Africa, the Pacific Rim, Europe, America, and World. Starting today,\u00a0Swimming World<\/em> will announce the top athletes in each region leading up to the announcement of the Male and Female World Swimmers of the Year on December 1st.<\/p>\n

Male African Swimmer of the Year Sponsored by Competitor<\/a><\/h2>\n

A gold medal in the 100 meter fly at the 2015 FINA World Championships\u00a0earned South African Chad le Clos<\/strong> his fourth straight\u00a0Swimming World Male African Male Swimmer of the Year award.\u00a0He is now tied with Roland Schoeman<\/strong> for the most career and\u00a0most consecutive wins since the magazine first began recognizing\u00a0the regional award in 2004. Schoeman won the first four honors\u00a0from 2004-07.<\/p>\n

Le Clos, 23, and three-time winner Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong>, 27,\u00a0of South Africa turned in similar performances this year, but le Clos\u2019\u00a0gold-silver showing in Kazan compared to van der Burgh\u2019s silversilver\u00a0performance seemed to give le Clos the advantage. Still, van\u00a0der Burgh collected five first-place votes, compared to le Clos\u2019 nine.\u00a0Le Clos first captured the silver medal behind Hungary\u2019s Laszlo\u00a0Cseh in the 200 meter butterfly. Cseh won in 1:53.48, with le Clos\u00a0coming up a bit short on his final 50 sprint to the wall, just 2-tenths\u00a0behind in 1:53.68.<\/p>\n

The two swimmers also finished 1-2 in the 100 fly, with le Clos\u00a0finding a measure of redemption with a 50.56 African record, ahead\u00a0of Cseh\u2019s 50.87. Le Clos also placed sixth in the 200 free (1:46.53).\u00a0Van der Burgh, meanwhile, earned two silver medals in the\u00a050 and 100 breastsroke events, finishing twice\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong> of Great Britain.<\/p>\n

Female African Swimmer of the Year Sponsored by Competitor<\/a><\/h2>\n

Zimbabwe\u2019s Kirsty Coventry<\/strong> survived an epic year by Egypt\u2019s\u00a0Farida Osman<\/strong> to claim a record eighth Swimming World Female\u00a0African Swimmer of the Year award.<\/p>\n

In a particularly difficult selection that featured neither of the\u00a0two front-runners winning medals at this summer\u2019s World Championships,\u00a0Coventry edged Osman with more consistent top-two votes\u00a0from the magazine\u2019s panel of 14 voters. While Osman owned the\u00a0advantage in first-place votes (eight to six), some voters ranked her\u00a0farther down their top-five lists than Coventry.<\/p>\n

Coventry, 32, led the African region in four events. As usual,\u00a0she dominated the 50, 100 and 200 meter backstroke with times of\u00a028.08, 1:00.09 and 2:10.01. She was nearly a second faster than her\u00a0competition in the 50, two seconds in the 100 and three seconds in\u00a0the 200. She also showed her versatility by turning in the region\u2019s\u00a0top time in the 200 IM (2:14.32)\u2014nearly a second-and-a-half ahead\u00a0of runner-up Marlies Ross from South Africa (2:15.71).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Osman, 20, also topped the region in a quartet of\u00a0events: 50 and 100 free (24.92, 55.41) as well as the 50 and 100\u00a0fly (25.78, 58.22). The American-born competitive swimmer who\u00a0represents Egypt internationally just wasn\u2019t as dominant in all of\u00a0her events.<\/p>\n

Away from the pool, Coventry has been pretty busy as well. In\u00a02012, she was elected to the IOC Athletes\u2019 Commission for an eight year\u00a0term that will take her through the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n
