LANCASTER, Pennsylvania, November 10. ANNE Miller swam to victory in three events to lead Swarthmore to a 114-91 win over Franklin & Marshall's women's team in Saturday's Centennial Conference (CC) meet. Miller picked up wins in the 500 and 1,000-yard free, as well as in the 100-yard butterfly. Franklin and Marshall's men's team won their meet, downing Swarthmore 129-76.<\/p>\n
The day started well for the Diplomats (2-2, 1-1 CC), with Brittany McCabe, Cydney Eldh, Jennie Payne and Meghan Karanian conspiring for a 4.02 second edge in the 200-yard medley relay, but Miller went to work in the second event, the 1,000-yard freestyle. She logged a 10:47.18, and was followed in by teammate Allison Bishop, who started the separation on the scoreboard. The Garnet went one-two in two of Miller's three races. <\/p>\n
Eldh gave F&M first place points in a pair of races, the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.20) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.44). Karanian took second in the 200-free with a 2:03.88. She also finished second in the 100-yard free, touching .10 seocnds after Swarthmore's Julia Wrobel, who clocked a 56.70. <\/p>\n
Laura Bassford finished second behind Eldh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.50). She also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.31). <\/p>\n
Was the only individual beyond Eldh to contribute individual first place points. She won the 100-yard backstroke with a 59.94. Lucia Parry touched second in that race at 1:03.79. <\/p>\n
The Diplomat women are idle until next Saturday when F&M travels to Pittsburgh to swim with Rochester, Carnegie Mellon, and Washington & Lee. <\/p>\n
On the men's side, Franklin & Marshall opened its Centennial Conference (CC) slate with their first win of the season. Derek Nowak posted three individual wins in freestyle races, while Matt Jaffee posted a pair of solo wins and contributed a winning relay leg to pace the Diplomats (1-2, 1-0 CC). <\/p>\n
Nowak won the 200, 500, and 1,000-yard freestyle races for F&M. He bested the field by 11 seconds, racing to a 10:29.11. He touched the wall at 1:50.21 in the 200-yard free, followed in by teammate Peter Fishler, who contributed second place points with a 1:50.93. Fishler also took second in the 100-yard freestyle. Nowak closed out his meet with a 4:55.32 in the 500-yard free, giving him better than a 10-second cushion in the field in that race. <\/p>\n
Jaffee teamed up with Tom Grabiak, Val Perfanov, and Phil Rehders to win the day's first event, the 200-yard medley relay. F&M's entry combined for a 1:40.44 to squeak out a .38 second win over the Swarthmore foursome. <\/p>\n
Jaffee went on to win the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:02.48. Grabiak added second place points clocking a 2:04.55. Jaffee added a win in the 100-yard backstroke to his day posting a 55.26. <\/p>\n
Grabiak and Perfanov each picked up individual wins in tight races. <\/p>\n
Grabiak took the 100-yard breaststroke with a .39 second edge on Swat's Kyle Skolfield, while Perfanov snuck away with a .28 second edge on the Garnet's Brian Roth in the 100-yard butterfly. Perfanov swam a 54.31. <\/p>\n
He teamed up with Fishler, Rehders and J.T. Cavey to close the meet on a high note with a 1:30.14 win in the 200-yard free relay. <\/p>\n
The Diplomat men travel to Pittsburgh to swim with Rochester, Carnegie Mellon, and Washington & Lee next Saturday.<\/p>\n
