HUNTINGTON, West Virginia, November 10. WITH only two home meets scheduled for the 2007-08 season, the Marshall swimming and diving team took full advantage of its own waters Saturday, posting 47 season best times and beating Vanderbilt 159-79 at the Fredrick A. Fitch Natatorium. <\/p>\n
"We swam very well today," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "I think we need to bring our pool with us on away trips. The girls were up from the start and went for it. <\/p>\n
"This is the way we should have been swimming from the start of the season. We need to take the effort, train with it and prepare for the Miami Invitational." <\/p>\n
Senior Michaela Sceli broke pool records in both the 200-yard and 100-yard breaststroke. The Ontario, Canada native clocked in at 1:04.53 in the 100 breast and 2:20.90 in the 200 to break the previous Fitch records. <\/p>\n
Lauren Goodwin set a pool record in the 400 individual medley. The Nitro, W.Va. native swam a season-best 4:31.25 in the event. <\/p>\n
Junior Siobhan Schuurman led the Herd diving squad once again, picking up two more wins in both the one-meter and three meter. Rachel Hannum broke the 200-point barrier in the one-meter for the first time in her collegiate career with a score of 210.90. Freshmen divers Haley Holmquist and Jordan Weber both had strong performances as well, finishing over 200 points in both one-meter and three-meter. <\/p>\n
In the sprints, Marshall went one, two, three in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Briana Burns took home first place honors in the heat with a time of 55.80. Freshman Susan Velte and sophomore Kelsie Eberly won the 100 and 200 backstroke events respectively. Velte produced a final time of 1:01.53, while Eberly came in at 2:11.73. <\/p>\n
"Our sprinters are continuing to improve," Kraus said. "Briana Burns might have had her best dual meet at Marshall today. Our backstrokers were aggressive and got out in a position to swim well. All around it was just a good performance that I hope we can carry with us." <\/p>\n
The Herd swimmers will return to action at the Miami Invitational hosted by Miami University on Nov. 29-Dec. 1.<\/p>\n
