FEDERAL WAY, July 22. Holland's Inky De Bruijn, smashed Jenny Thompson's week-old U.S. Open mark in the 100 meter freestyle when she clocked a time of 54.01 seconds at the Region XII Senior Championships in Federal Way, Washington.
\n De Bruijn's time, which missed her own world mark of 53.80 set earlier this summer, equals the sceond fastest 100 meter swim ever swum by a woman. In September 1994, China's Le Jingyi also swam 54.01. Despite widespread suspicion of doping, Le's time stood as the world record until De Bruijn broke it this year.
\n The old U.S. Open mark, 54.27, was set just a week earlier by Jenny Thompson at the Janet Evans Invitational. Thompson's time remains an American record.
\n In a meet last weekend in Georgia, Kristy Kowal swam a lifetime best 2:15.80 for the 200m individual medley, unshaved and unrested. Kowal told swiminfo she is not sure whether or not she will swim the IM at the US Olympic Trials next month. That event is scheduled on the same day as the 100m breaststroke.
