FORT WORTH, Texas, November 10. THE TCU men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Wyoming on Saturday at the University Recreation Center. The loss dropped the men to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while the women fell to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the MWC.<\/p>\n
"We looked bright in a lot of spots today, but we just fell short," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma. "Josh Bagby, Jonathon Berrettini and Scott McCracken really swam well for the men. I'm really proud of our women's team as well. They're getting better with every week. Wyoming swam great today, and we'll be ready when the conference tournament rolls around."<\/p>\n
The men took the top spot in seven of the 16 events, but fell short by a score of 172-128.<\/p>\n
Berrettini, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, highlighted action for the men by sweeping the backstroke events. In the 100-back, Berrettini edged teammate Jeff Gettel to take the top spot in a time of 50.90. Berrettini would place first in the 200-back with a time of 1:51.55, followed by Gettel's runner-up time of 1:52.76. Berrettini has now notched seven event wins this season to lead the Frogs.<\/p>\n
Fellow senior McCracken placed first in the 50-free with a time of 21.07, ahead of Bagby's second-place time of 21.44. Bagby would take the top spot in the 100-free with a time of 46.73.<\/p>\n
Other notable performances came from TCU freshmen Jeff Hendricks, Bryce Orser and Edgar Peyro. Hendricks and Orser both recorded runner-up finishes in the 200-free and 500-free, respectively. Peyro tallied two top-three finishes, placing second in the 200-fly and third in the 100-fly. <\/p>\n
R.J. Hesselberg led the Frogs in the diving events. Hesselberg, a junior from Saskatoon, Canada, won the three-meter with a score of 316.65 in six dives, and placed second in the one-meter with a score of 270.53.<\/p>\n
The Frogs continued their dominance in the relay events, taking the top spot in the 400-medley and 400-free relays. The team of Berrettini, Cameron Allred, Peyro and McCracken took first place in the 400-medley relay with a time of 1:34.60. Bagby provided another spark in the last leg of the 400-free relay, leading the men to the victory in a time of 3:06.61. The men's `A' relay team has now won seven of seven events this season.<\/p>\n
The women dropped their second MWC contest of the season by a score of 173-123.<\/p>\n
Four swimmers won events for TCU, highlighted by a dominating performance from freshman Jessica Miles. In the 1000-free, Miles took first place with a time of 10:22.92, which was over 10 seconds faster than the next competitor. The time ranks fourth all-time at TCU. Miles also recorded a runner-up finish in the 500-free with a time of 5:09.65.<\/p>\n
Fellow freshman Brittney Martinez notched her second win of the season in the 100-back, taking the top spot in a season-best time of 58.59.<\/p>\n
Stephanie Futscher also recorded a season-best time, placing first in the 200-fly with a time of 2:06.17.<\/p>\n
Natalie Melenric would round out the winners on the women's side, placing first with a time of 58.93. Mychala Lynch followed with a third-place finish (59.57).<\/p>\n
Several Frogs recorded runner-up finishes against the Cowgirls. Cheryl Townsend placed second in the 200-back and 200-IM events, while Melanie Cruthirds took the runner-up spot in the 200-free. Nikki Pappas placed second in the 50-free and third in the 100-free, while Katie Rosen finished second in the 200-breast and third in the 100-breast.<\/p>\n
TCU recorded second-place finishes in both of the relay events. The 200-medley relay team of Martinez, Rosen, Melenric and Pappas notched a time of 1:49.05, while the 400-free relay team of Pappas, Martinez, Shannon Jones and Melanie Cruthirds swam to a time of 3:38.76.<\/p>\n
The Frogs will host their final home meet of the fall on Friday at 4 p.m. against UNLV. <\/p>\n
