NEW YORK, New York, November 9. COLUMBIA broke a Uris Pool record and placed first in 11 of 16 events in a 173-127 victory over Yale in the season opener for both teams.<\/p>\n
The season got underway with flair for the Lions as the 200 medley relay squad shattered a four-year-old pool record by more than half a second. Junior Lauren Fraley (back), senior Amy Krakauer (breast), sophomore Allison Hobbs (fly) and junior Hannah Galey (free) swam 1:45.60 to handily win the event.<\/p>\n
"We were just ready to race and display the great training we have done thus far," said Diana Caskey, head swim coach. "Breaking a pool record in the opening event is, hopefully, a harbinger of things to come."<\/p>\n
It was the first of two pool records to fall in the meet, as Yale's Susan Kim swam 2:17.79 to take first in the 200 breaststroke, surpassing the previous mark of 2:18.90 set by Cristina Teuscher \u201800CC in 1998.<\/p>\n
Columbia jumped out to a 28-8 lead after two events as juniors Shannon Hosey and Joanna Corby turned in a one-two finish, respectively, on the three-meter board to open the meet. Hosey scored 270.675 to best the field of six, while Corby totaled 245.85. The tandem also finished first and second on the one-meter board. Hosey posted a six-dive score of 253.28 and Corby finished with 233.10.<\/p>\n
In the swim events, Galey won two individual events in addition to anchoring two first-place relays. In the 200 free, she held an early lead, fell behind at the 150, but rallied to win in 1:53.38. She went on to win the 100 free in 52.19. <\/p>\n
Columbia posted a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 back, led by Fraley in 58.29. Urubshurow was second in 58.81 and Bridgette McCabe swam 59.14 for third.<\/p>\n
The Lions followed that up with a 1-2 showing in the 100 breast. First-year Mariele Dunn, a double-winner in her first collegiate meet, was first to the wall in 1:04.91, followed by senior co-captain Amy Krakauer in 1:05.08. Dunn also won the 200 individual medley in 2:08.75.<\/p>\n
The team score stood at 86-64 in Columbia's favor at the midpoint of the meet following a 1-2 finish for Yale in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
The Lions posted another 1-2 finish in the 200 back as Delghir Urubshurow swam 2:05.16 to win the event, followed by Bridgette McCabe in 2:05.69. Sophomore Allison Hobbs capped the Lions' individual event triumphs with a time of 57.79 in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n
Columbia bookended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay in 3:31.74. Christina Hughes, Urubshurow, Fraley and Galey led from the second leg on in the win.<\/p>\n
"It was a total team effort," Caskey noted. "We had great performances across the board. To succeed at the Ivy League Championships, we will need this kind of depth."<\/p>\n
The Lions return to action Friday, Novemeber 16 in a home meet vs. Harvard at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
