Swimmers of all abilities gathered from as far away as Denmark\u00a0and Alaska to race in glorious tropical weather in one of three distances: five miles, three miles, or one\u00a0mile, all ending at the legendary Buccaneer Resort. Welcomed ashore and over the finish line by\u00a0hundreds of supporters, swimmers and a myriad of volunteers were treated to steel pan music and\u00a0massages on the palm-lined Mermaid beach, followed by a well-earned and bountiful awards luncheon.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-race activities included a complimentary swim clinic by open water swimming guru <strong>Alex Kostich<\/strong> and\u00a0Olympic Gold Medalist <strong>Misty Hyman<\/strong> for new open water swimmers, a pre-race talk complete with Google Earth sighting guides, and a cocktail party at the beachfront Mermaid Restaurant that featured\u00a0local folkloric entertainment. The Buccaneer\u2019s owner and manager, <strong>Elizabeth Armstrong<\/strong>, who is the\u00a0founder of the race and swims the five mile distance each year, welcomed the participants and their\u00a0families, along with the Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism, Beverly Nicholson-Doty.<\/p>\n<p>The race is best known for its signature distance, the challenging and beautiful five mile race which\u00a0features a sandy beach start from St Croix\u2019s pride and joy, Buck Island, a small island surrounded by a\u00a0living coral reef, and designated a National Monument by the US National Park Service. Swimmers enjoy\u00a0an awe-inspiring sunrise boat trip enroute to the island. Ninety one swimmers participated in this year\u2019s\u00a0five mile race, and were supported by safety kayaks, paddleboards and safety boats all along the route.<\/p>\n<p>Almost as much a signature of the event is the champion and former USA National Team member,\u00a0Californian <strong>Alex Kostich<\/strong>, who won his 16th title out of 17 starts in the five mile distance on Sunday in a\u00a0time of 1:41:45. He was followed by 16 year old St Croix native <strong>Matthew Mayes<\/strong> (1:47:42) and <strong>Rob\u00a0Jones<\/strong> from Charlottesville VA (1:48:41).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marc Gershel<\/strong> from New York, NY (56:52) claimed the top spot in the Two Mile Race, followed closely by\u00a0<strong>Matthew Greeley<\/strong> from Durham, NC (57:04) and <strong>Denise Smart<\/strong> (57:19) from Tulsa, OK.<\/p>\n<p>The One Mile Race was won by <strong>David Greeley<\/strong> from Durham, NC, with<strong> Ryan Williams<\/strong> from Pompano\u00a0Beach, FL (26:27) in second and St Croix\u2019s<strong> Bridget Klein<\/strong> in third (31:05).<\/p>\n<p>With competitors from ages 11 to 68, awards for age groups were also given.
