PHOENIX, Arizona, November 8. IN an inter-divisional match-up, Division II Seattle University hosts Division III Whitworth University in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com<\/b> Meet of the Week.<\/p>\n

Whitworth's Last Time Out:<\/b>
\nNatalie Turner set a Whitworth Aquatic Center record and posted an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time to lead the Pirate women to a 160-39 win over visiting Linfield College in a Northwest Conference swimming dual meet on Nov. 3. The Pirate men completed the sweep of the Wildcats with a 136-69 win.<\/p>\n
Turner won the 1650 yard freestyle in a time of 17:37.24, breaking the old Whitworth Aquatic Center record of 17:49.13 set by Barbara Graham of Simon Fraser at the 1986 NAIA Championship meet. Turner also won the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:04.54.
\nSamantha Kephart posted her first NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark while winning the 100 yard butterfly in 57.88. She also won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:21.92. Brittany Gresset also won twice for the Pirate women, who swept to victory in all 11 of the dual meet events. Gresset won the 50 yard freestyle in 24.68 and the 100 yard freestyle in 55.27.<\/p>\n
Whitworth's David Dolphay and Michael Woodward both won twice in the men's meet. Dolphay won the 1,650 free in 16:47.37 and the 500 free in 4:45.28. Woodward won the 200 yard free (1:45.39) and the 100 yard free (48.31).<\/p>\n
The meet's other double winner on Saturday was Dominic Rieniets of Linfield who won both the 50 yard freestyle (22.25) and 100 yard butterfly (52.79).<\/p>\n

\nI'm excited about this weekend. I think it is going to be a very fast meet on both sides. We always have good dual meets with Seattle University. They are a very talented and well-coached team. So, I think to beat them, we are definitely going to have to be on top of our A game. We match up pretty well with them on the women's side when you scout out the early season results, and on the men's side they have edged us in a number of events, but I think our top guys are close enough to them where we can catch them if we can step up a bit across the board. It'll make for an interesting meet. Regardless of the outcome, both teams should be able to walk away with a lot of season-best times and, hopefully, some NCAA championship qualifying standards.<\/i><\/p>\n
Seattle's Last Time Out:<\/b>
\nThe Seattle University swim teams swam in the Simon Fraser Clan Cup over the weekend. The meet included the Chinese National Team and several top Canadian Teams. The meet was scored as a combined meet with both men and women accounting for the final score. Seattle placed sixth of the 13 teams with several top individual performances.<\/p>\n
Gordon Smith (Kennewick, Wash.) had two top five finishes, placing fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.92 and finishing second in the 400 freestyle final by swimming a time of 4:07.16<\/p>\n
Chris Coley (Austin, Texas) just missed a B standard by swimming a 57.97 in the 100 Butterfly to advance to the final where he took fifth. He also finished third in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.65<\/p>\n
Nathan Freeman (Phoenix, Ariz.) had two top four finished, taking third in the 800 freestyle in a time of 8:53.50 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:58.27.<\/p>\n
Michael Wheeler (Fremont, Calif.) finished fifth in the 200 backstroke by swimming a time of 2:15.72. He also swam 2:14.68 in the prelims.<\/p>\n
Bryson Chiu (Carmel, Ind.) placed third in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:12.09. In the 200 butterfly Kevin Daniels (Newcastle, Wash.) finished fourth with a time of 2:13.38<\/p>\n
In the women's 1500 freestyle, Seattle got a second place finish from Kelsey Henan (Billings, Mont.) who swam a time of 18:05.07 and a fifth place from Christina Hunsberger (Bellevue, Wash.) who swam a time of 19:00.21.<\/p>\n
Hunsberger also placed third in the 800 freestyle in a time of 9:37.60. Just behind her was Alison Colnon (Seattle, Wash.) who finished fifth in 9:40.41.<\/p>\n
In the relays, the Seattle women finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay when a team of Colnon, Henan, Kaci Dudley (Murrieta, Calif.), and Elizabeth Hanohano (Honolulu, Hawaii) swam a time of 1:55.77. In the 200 medley relay Seattle finished fifth with a time of 2:07.98 swum by Francesca Reale (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Carole Triem (Petersburg, Alaska), Alex Weiss (Reno, Nev.), and Henan.<\/p>\n
For the men, Seattle finished second in the 200 freestyle relay with a team of Doug Djang (Seattle, Wash.), Smith, Bryant Bevers (Federal Way, Wash.), and Coley. They backed that up with a fourth place swim in the 200 medley relay with a team of Chiu, Djang, Coley, and Bevers that swam a time of 1:48.62.<\/p>\n

\nWe have a rich competitive history with Whitworth College. Regardless of the difference in competitive domains, us D-II going to D-I and them D-III, we both came from NAIA backgrounds where we often had meets come down to the last relay. It is critical when putting together a competitive season to provide diverse racing opportunities for the student-athletes. The meet challenges them to be adaptable and gives them a chance to try different events. It challenges the insight to recognize the greatness in others regardless of national affiliation. It is an in-state rival we have always been excited to swim against them, it brings out the best in both sides.<\/i><\/p>\n
