BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, November 3. LEHIGH caught its first glimpse of Patriot League competition at Jacobs Pool, with a meet against the men and women from Colgate and the women from Navy. The Mountain Hawk men picked up their first win of the season, winning 11 of 13 events in a convincing 160-70 victory over Colgate. The Lehigh women had a much stiffer challenge, facing the top two teams in the league's preseason poll. Junior Melanie Rolish won the 200 yard breaststroke, but Lehigh fell to Navy 183.5-57.5 and to Colgate 151-75.<\/p>\n
"Our men swam really well today and did a nice job to beat a team that was ranked ahead of them in the preseason poll," said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. "We had some big swims from our freshman. Melanie's win highlighted our effort on the women's side. Navy is a very good team and broke many pool records today."<\/p>\n
Sophomore Kevin McGrath led the way for the Lehigh men, winning three events, the 200 IM, 500 free and 200 breast. Senior Jonathan Kearney finished second to McGrath in the 500 free and added a strong effort in the 200 fly, winning with a time of 1:57.03, nearly four seconds faster than second place. <\/p>\n
Junior Dan Johnson continued his success in the sprints, sweeping the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Senior captain Clark Cohen had another strong showing on the diving board, scoring 270.90 in the one meter and 302.40 in the three meter.<\/p>\n
Lehigh also won the 200 medley relay with freshman Billy Dunne, senior Mike Hay, sophomore Ben Dearden and Johnson teaming up. Dunne added a win in the 200 back, while Dearden took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.42<\/p>\n
On the women's side, event wins were hard to come by, due to the strength of the defending league champion Midshipmen and a Colgate team picked to finish second in the league. Rolish swam a time of 2:24.11 to win the 200 breast. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Allison Rolish and freshman Lauren Kindrick finished third and fourth respectively in the 1000 free, while freshman Allison Montanye had another strong effort in the 50 free taking third place with a time of 25.47. <\/p>\n
On the diving board, sophomore Erin Tormey held her own with Navy's skilled divers, placing third in the one and three meter events.<\/p>\n
