CARMEL, Indiana, November 3. THE Illinois State swimming and diving team had a successful triangular meet, claming a 188-42 victory over host Butler and a 168-69 win over Youngstown State. Freshmen Molly Gomberg and Amy Schaefer, sophomores Catharine Danenhower and Lindsay Dinkelman, and seniors Kathleen Borkovec, Tracy Deyell, Katie Janonis and Valerie Zaleski all had first-place finishes in their respective events. <\/p>\n
Head swimming and diving coach Steve Paska was pleased with how the team responded to back-to-back meets. <\/p>\n
"Competing (for the second time) in less than 24 hours was a challenge," Paska said. "The team responded very well to the challenge that was placed in front of them and they swam with consistency. As a team, we had several solid performances and had a number of personal-best and season-best swims. <\/p>\n
"Amy Schaefer had double wins in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle. It was the first time this season we were able to swim the mile (1650-yard freestyle) event. Christine Steinbach stood up to the challenge of swimming the mile and placed first, while we also took third and fourth place in the mile. Allison Fishbein placed second in the 200-yard butterfly and had a personal-best time. Lindsay Dinkelman won the 200-yard breaststroke, beating her personal-best time, and Molly Gomberg won the 100-yard butterfly and set a personal-best time, as well." <\/p>\n
Paska felt that the team had a successful weekend and is looking forward to future meets. <\/p>\n
"Overall, the team met the objective that I was aiming for," Paska said. They performed well both days and swam with the consistency that I was looking for. It was a very eventful evening for us. I look forward to competing at home again against Illinois next Saturday (Nov. 10) and preparing for the Akron Invitational (Nov.30-Dec. 2)." <\/p>\n
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann was also happy with how the Redbird divers responded to the challenge of competing in back-to-back meets. <\/p>\n
"Katie (Janonis) won both the one-meter and three-meter events. The divers came back after a good competition (Friday) and performed well. I am looking forward to the next few weeks until the Akron Invitational<\/p>\n
