COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, November 3. THE Duke women's swimming and diving squad defeated Maryland, 155-139, while the Blue Devil men dropped a close decision to the Terrapins, 149-145, at the Eppley Recreation Center.<\/p>\n
Freshman Ashley Twichell took first place in three events on the day, touching first in the 1000 free, 200 free and 500 free events. Her NCAA "B" standard time of 1:49.68 for the 200 free set a new school record, her fourth school record set in three meets, including besting her own school record in the 1000 free one meet after shattering the previous three-year-old mark. <\/p>\n
Twichell also anchored the second-place 400 freestyle relay squad, as the all-freshman foursome of Emily Lang, Kirstie Jeffrey, Katie Magee and she touched in 3:30.78.<\/p>\n
Freshman Jessica Perry (100 breast), sophomore Meredith Bannon (200 breast) and sophomore Shannon Beall (100 fly) were all event winners on the day, while sophomore Julie Brummond was a double-winner, taking top honors on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Perry also recorded a second-place finish in the 200 breast, while Bannon took runner-up honors in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n
"This is a tremendous start to the season," said head coach Dan Colella. "The team continues to take it to the next level each weekend. It's early but we're off to a great start and hopefully we can keep it up through the next few weekends."<\/p>\n
Duke improves to a perfect 5-0 (2-0 ACC) on the season, while Maryland falls to 1-1 (0-1 ACC).<\/p>\n
On the men's side, the outcome came down to the final event, the 400 free relay, as a Terrapin foursome finished before Duke's team of sophomores Sean Smith and David Carlson and freshmen Spencer Booth and Andy Osterland to take the win.<\/p>\n
Recording victories for the Blue Devils were Osterland (200 free), sophomore Eric Ness (200 fly), sophomore Eric Winnard (1-meter diving), Booth (200 back) and junior Nick Campisano (3-meter diving). Sophomore Andrew Clark (1000 free, 500 free) notched two wins on the day for Duke.<\/p>\n
"We're proud of everyone," said Colella. "We fought to a really close finish and had some outstanding swims, and some come-from-behind swims. It came down to the last relay, and they came away with it, but we'll see them again at the end of the year."<\/p>\n
The Terrapin men improve to 2-0 (1-0 ACC), while the Blue Devils fall to 1-3 (0-2 ACC).<\/p>\n
