WASHINGTON D.C., November 3. SOPHMORES Owen Black and Brandon Hargraves each won a pair of events to pace the La Salle men's swimming team in a 142-77 win at George Washington. The victory gives the Explorers a 3-0 record to start the season. <\/p>\n
Hargraves won both the 1,000 and 500-yard freestyles in convincing fashion. The Coatesville, PA native dominated the competition in the 1,000, finishing with a time of 10:02.28, more than 25 seconds ahead of the Colonials' James Forrest. Hargraves was equally impressive in the 500, clocking in at a time of 4:54.01, which was more than 10 seconds better than Forrest, who took second in both events.<\/p>\n
Black edged out a couple of Explorer teammates en route to his two first place finishes on the afternoon. In the 200-yard freestyle, Black won the gold in a narrow victory over fellow Explorer Grant Chin. Black later beat out senior John Welsh to take the top spot in the 100-yard freestyl<\/p>\n
Chin would go on to finish first in the 200-yard butterfly. <\/p>\n
Freshmen Chris Tiano and Kieran Edling also captured first-place finishes on the afternoon. Tiano and junior David Ellerson finished 1-2 in the 200-yard I.M., while Edling took first in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Stuart Barr finished ahead of Welsh to win the 50-yard freestyle event.<\/p>\n
La Salle's 400-yard medley relay team, comprised of Edling, Chin, Tom Whelan and Dustin Gibb, earned a first-place finish in the event.<\/p>\n
For the women, the swimming and diving team earned a convincing 134-94 victory at George Washington on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Explorers improve to 3-1 on the year. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Shannon Duval got things started for La Salle with a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 10:32.04. She also swam past the competition in the 200-yard I.M., earning top finish (2:08.98).<\/p>\n
Junior Carleen Caldwell also had a big day for the Explorers, taking first place in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.05) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.69). The top three spots in the 100 all went to Explorers, as freshman Holly Biro and senior Melanie Charles finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
In addition to her second-place finish in the 100, Biro claimed the gold in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 25.17. Classmate Jess Carbin edged out Duval for first-place in the 200-yard backstroke. Carbin finished in a time of 2:10.98, just ahead of Duval (2:12.50).<\/p>\n
Junior Shannon Halleran garnered the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly, narrowly defeating GW's Nicole Mansfield by three-tenths of a second. Senior Jaclyn Kubala won the gold in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.86).<\/p>\n
La Salle's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Biro, Kubala, Charles and Aubrey Cefalo finished first with a time of 3:43.21. <\/p>\n
