EVANSTON, Illinois, October 26. IN a Big Ten Conference battle, the Indiana Hoosiers dominated the Northwestern Wildcats in Evanston, Ill., on Oct. 26. The No. 8 IU men downed No. 18 NU, 167-127, while the No. 23 IU women beat Northwestern, 163.5-136.5.<\/p>\n
Indiana put together an amazing performance in both the men's and the women's meets. For the men, IU claimed 14 out of 16 titles, while Ben Hesen posted a pair of B-cut times in the 100 back (48.68r) and 100 fly (47.89). For Northwestern, Kyle Bubolz took second in the 100 fly, but wound up with a B-cut time (48.41) of his own.<\/p>\n
For the women, the Hoosiers won 10 events, while Northwestern captured five crowns. The teams shared the 500 freestyle title as IU's Amanda Smith and NU's Kassia Shishkoff clocked matching 4:53.49s, which cleared the B-cut threshold.<\/p>\n
Indiana had a trio of B cuts, including Smith's middle distance event. Presley Bard actually eclipse the 100 back provisional mark twice, first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 54.99, before coming back to win the individual event in 54.54. Meanwhile, Brittany Barwegen won the 200 fly (1:59.44) to also post a B cut.<\/p>\n
Northwestern's women picked up a B cut as well over and above Shishkoff's effort as Katie Braun clocked a 55.34 to win the 100 fly.<\/p>\n
A few divers also qualified for zones as IU's Landon Marzullo (1m \u2013 328.20) and Brittney Feldman (1m \u2013 308.45; 3m \u2013 312.60) and NU's Ryan McIntosh (1m \u2013 316.80) and Leanne Dumais (1m \u2013 283.88; 3m \u2013 303.15) each will continue on to zones.<\/p>\n
Indiana head coach Ray Looze:<\/b>
\nEvery time Northwestern and IU swim, it's always a good meet and this year was no exception. The Northwestern men have had one of the best teams in the NCAA the last several years, and it was another good meet between the two teams. The women's meet was also very close throughout, so we're just humbled to be able to come in here and come out with a win.<\/p>\n
I thought that the team did a better job then where we previously were, so we're just trying to come together as a team, improve our depth and get more people involved in scoring. We won some real close races, which is really critical, so I guess that's what I'm most happy about.<\/p>\n
We're pretty strong in the strokes right now, but we can be better in the freestyles too, so we'll look to put some more emphasis on that.<\/i><\/p>\n
Northwestern head men's coach Bob Groseth<\/b>
\nI think the meet went according to form. We have a completely different team this year and, hopefully, we'll improve meet-by-meet as we go through the season. We have completely different personnel and completely different objectives, so it's the first meet of the year and we've only been in school for five weeks. They've been in school for two months and obviously it showed in their performance. <\/p>\n
They've got a very good team and we have to be absolutely at our best to be competitive with them and we weren't at our best. <\/p>\n
Eric Nilsson was very sick and I thought for him to win the 200, it was a very good swim. As you could see in his other races, he just wasn't up to it. Adam Beckman getting second in the 200 back was a great swim for him. Alex Hostoffer is swimming hungry, and wants to be a lot better and we need to see more of that from the other guys. Sean Mathews and Peter Park provided very encouraging swims. There are some good guys in there, and we'll be better as we go along.<\/i><\/p>\n
Northwestern head women's coach Jimmy Tierney:<\/b>
\nIt was a real good, competitive meet. They're just a step ahead of us. I think they are a couple weeks earlier in training and higher up at the moment, but our girls competed really well today. We just have a few spots we need to shore up a little bit, and they'll be in better shape toward the end of the fall. I'll look forward to being better with some of these other Big Ten teams coming up like Purdue and Wisconsin, so I'm proud of the girls. They did really well today.<\/p>\n
Katie Braun was outstanding today. Her flies were terrific with the butterfly and the fly on the relay. Emily Wong went into the sprint in the freestyles and led off and got us a huge lead, so she did a terrific job. There were a lot of really good swims, Kassia Shishkoff fighting back in that 500 to get the tie. They showed a lot of heart today. We had a couple of girls get lifetime best times and that's almost unheard of at this time of year, so what we're doing is working and this is just the first step along the way.<\/i><\/p>\n
