DURHAM, North Carolina, October 20. THE Duke swimming and diving teams opened their 2007-08 seasons with commanding victories as the Blue Devil men defeated UNC Wilmington, 187-109, and the Duke women defeated UNCW, 199-96, and Richmond, 190-93.5, at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.<\/p>\n
The Blue Devil men received victories from sophomore Andrew Clark (1000 free – 9:43.45), sophomores Murillo Adrados (100 back – 53.49) and Tim McKeever (200 back – 1:55.24), and freshman Nick Garvy (100 fly – 51.99), while senior Andy Osterland (200 free – 1:43.70, 100 free – 47.93) and freshman Spencer Booth (200 fly – 1:55.35, 500 free – 4:45.71) were double-winners for Duke.<\/p>\n
Junior Nick Campisano picked up first-place finishes on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, notching scores of 289.73 and 298.95, respectively, and the Duke 400 free relay team closed out a great day in the pool as Osterland, Garvy and sophomores David Hahn and Sean Smith touched in 3:10.17 for a top finish.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, freshman Ashley Twichell shattered a Duke school record in the 1000 free by nearly seven seconds, finishing in 9:59.15 for a first-place finish in her first collegiate outing. Twichell also took first in the 200 free (1:54.68).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Shannon Beall (200 fly – 2:01.41), freshman Melissa Reynolds (500 free – 5:15.34) and sophomore Emily McClintock (100 fly – 55.98) were all event winners, while freshman Jessica Perry (100 breast – 1:05.67, 200 breast – 2:22.69) and senior Danielle Spearman (100 back – 58.01, 100 free – 52.85) won two events each.<\/p>\n
On the diving boards, sophomore Julie Brummond dominated the competition, taking first in the 1-meter (275.25) event and on the 3-meter board (290.03).
\nDuke opened and closed the meet with relay victories, as freshmen Allison Spiedel and Kirstie Jeffrey and sophomores Elizabeth Bellew and Meredith Bannon touched in 3:58.43 in the meet-opening 400 medley relay, and Jeffrey, Twichell, Spearman and freshman Katie Magee finished in 3:34.16 in the final event, the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n
"Ever since day one this team has been very intense," said Duke head coach Dan Colella. "Everyone has had a great attitude and everyone has been working hard, and was great to see that pay off today. Starting the season off with wins today is outstanding, and we hope to carry the momentum into our next meet and throughout the season."<\/p>\n
