LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey, October 20. THE UMBC men's and women's swimming diving teams opened the 2007-08 season with a double-win over Rider University at Coppola Pool. The Retriever men were victorious over Rider by a margin of 170-125, while the Retriever women earned a 165-134 victory over the Broncs.<\/p>\n
The women set four Coppola Pool records in the contest, with junior Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa.\/The Hill School) taking two–in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Freshman Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md.\/Notre Dame Prep) turned in a record-setting performance in the 1000 freestyle, while junior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md.\/Wilde Lake), freshman Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.\/Charles W. Baker), and seniors Carly Fitzpatrick (Delran, N.J.\/Delran) and Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md.\/James M. Bennett) combined to set a new record in the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n
Cantwell was a double-winner for the Retrievers as she turned in pool record-setting performances of 1:05.74 and 2:21.35 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Those two events were the only two the Retrievers completed a 1-2-3 sweep of as well, as junior Joy Wilde (Greenlawn, N.Y.\/Harborfields) turned in a second place (1:09.01) performance in the 100 breast and third place (2:30.19) in the 200 breast. Freshman Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn.\/Loomis Chaffee School) completed the sweep of the 100 breast with a third place time of 1:09.89 and claimed second in the 200 breast in 2:29.82. Cantwell was also a part of the second place 200 medley relay and placed third in the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2:11.23.<\/p>\n
Godwin was a two-time victor, as well, as she set a new pool record of 10:18.37 in the 1000 free and won the 500 free with a time of 5:07.70, while also swimming a leg on the second place 400 free relay.<\/p>\n
The Retriever relay of Surkovich, Wohlers, Fitzpatrick, and Engler swam a time of 3:38.32 to set the Retrievers fourth pool record of the day. Engler and Surkovich each claimed an individual victory on the day with Engler turning in a time of 25.00 in the 50 free and Surkovich a 1:54.53 in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
The only other individual winner on the women's side was sophomore Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic\/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho), who turned in a time of 2:09.41 to claim the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n
Junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada\/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) led the Retrievers on the men's side turning in an individual victory in the 100 (47.33) and spearheading a sweep of the 200 free with a time of 1:44.37. Freshman Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md.\/Arundel) and senior Adam Eiben (Pittsburgh, Pa.\/Baldwin) came in right behind Bronson with times of 1:46.63 and 1:47.77, respectively. Bronson also teamed with Jones, Eiben and junior Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia\/Svetozar Markovic) to win the 400 free relay with a time of 3:15.30.<\/p>\n
Junior Evan Roseberry (Sinking Spring, Pa.\/Wilson) also led Retriever sweeps as he recorded times of 9:50.15 and 4:48.92 in the 1000 and 500 free, respectively. Senior Joey Sementelli (Framingham, Mass.\/Framingham) finished behind Roseberry in the 1000 with a time of 9:57.25 and was third in the 500 in 4:54.36. Freshman Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada\/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) picked up the third place in the 1000 with a time of 10:02.47.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Rasmus Kutt (Tallinn, Estonia\/Gustav Adolf Gymnazium) was also a double-winner for the Retrievers, turning in a time of 52.95 in the 100 backstroke and leading a sweep of the 200 back with a time of 1:53.98. Freshman Keilan Freeman (Calgary,Alberta, Canada\/Argyll Centre) and Djukic followed in suit with times of 1:58.84 and 1:59.27 to complete the sweep.<\/p>\n
Freshman Brad Reitz was the last double-winner for the Retrievers as he posted winning times in the 100 (51,49) and 200 (1:55.55) butterfly. Junior Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa.\/Wilson) and sophomore Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J.\/Cherry Hill West) added the final individual victories for the Retrievers, in the 200 breast (2;15.90) and 200 IM (1:59.87).<\/p>\n
