The Arizona State Sun Devils\u00a0turned in a pair of wins over the Rebels of UNLV on Saturday at their home dual. The men posted a victory of 202-95 while the women finished with a score of 181-117.<\/p>\n

The Arizona State swim and dive team put on a show for the crowd on a beautiful day at Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex against UNLV on Saturday, Oct. 24.<\/p>\n

The Sun Devil men rolled to a 202-95 victory while the women joined in with a 181-117 win over the Rebels.<\/p>\n

Head coach Bob Bowman expressed being very pleased with the performance, but said there are little technical things that can be ironed out and the squads need to continue to progress before their next meet.<\/p>\n

It didn’t take long for the men and women to get in a groove, as they combined to win nine of the first 10 events to take a 131-54 lead — 69-23 for the men and 62-31 for the women.<\/p>\n

Junior Anna Olasz helped the women earn 19 points, with a victory in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle, along with fifth place in the 200-yard butterfly.<\/p>\n

Her teammate, junior Alysha Bush, continues to demonstrate her talent in the sprints, edging UNLV’s Julia Fhervari in the 50-yard freestyle by .01 seconds witih a time of 23.29. Two events later, she had no problem winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.16. Bush is now undefeated in all six of her sprint races. Bowman also utilized her abilities for victories in the 200-yard medley relay with teammates Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, Kaya Philapil and Marina Spadoni.<\/p>\n

Jonsdottir and Spadoni also recorded wins of their own in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly respectively. Philapil earned seven points on the afternoon, taking second in the 100-yard breaststroke and third-place in the 200-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n

On the men’s side, sophomore Patrick Park racked up 18 points for the men with victories in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle. He anchored the 200-yard medley relay along teammates Elliott Reid, Christian Lorenz and Tadas Duskinas for the Sun Devil mens’ first win of the afternoon with a time of 1:29.68. As if that wasn’t enough, Park finished the race with Duskinas, Thomaz Martins and Barkley Perry for second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.<\/p>\n

Senior Kyle Sockwell tallied 13 points with a nice rally in the 200-yard individual medley, third-place in the 200-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n

After the 10th event, the men and women rolled to win 18 of the last 22 events in the meet — including four diving events between the Rebels and ASU.<\/p>\n

Sophomore Mara Aicoboae swept the women’s 1- and 3-meter diving events, earning 277.95 and 248.55 points in each event respectively.<\/p>\n

Fellow divers, sophomores David Hoffer and Heikki Makikallio went 1-2 in the 1-meter event and then swapped spots in the 3-meter event, earning 13 points for ASU in each event.<\/p>\n

Sun Devil swim and dive enjoys a week off for further preparation before a big Pac-12 showdown with USC on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. at Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex.<\/p>\n

The UNLV swimming and diving teams suffered a second road loss to start the season on Saturday, as the Rebel women scored 117 compared to ASU’s 181, while the men suffered a 202-95 defeat.<\/div>\n

In the women’s competition,\u00a0Lina Rathsack\u00a0earned the first win for UNLV of the meet in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.53.\u00a0Kimberly Hendrick\u00a0followed not long after with a first-place showing in the 200 fly (2:05.31). Rathsack later swam a 2:17.60 in the 200 breast to claim her second win of the day.<\/div>\n

The men’s 50 free would be the lone event won by the Rebels, thanks to\u00a0Dillon Virva’s\u00a0time of 20.46. The relay team of Virva,\u00a0Kasey Foley,\u00a0Dylan Tarazona, and Forest Beesley exhibited a performance consistent with their previous meet, as they claimed first in the 200 free (1:21.30).<\/div>\n

On the diving side, the Rebel women pulled up just short in the 1 and 3-meter, as\u00a0Alyssa Arnett, Mykayla Fielding, and\u00a0Shelby Steiger\u00a0placing second, third, and fourth in both events.\u00a0Lucas James\u00a0was third for the men’s squad on both boards as well.<\/div>\n
