Illinois Press Release:<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Illinois Swimming and Diving team began their road schedule in East Lansing on Friday, Oct. 23. The Illini came away with the victory, defeating Michigan State 182-112. Illinois now owns a 17-9 advantage in the overall series, including victories in each of the last eight meetings.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverall we put together a very strong meet from start to finish,\u201d said head coach Sue Novitsky. \u201cWe had talked about building true excellence and to be willing to fight and to take some risks.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Illini started fast by winning the first three events. The Illinois 200 medley relay team of Sloane McDermott, Isabella Schamber, Lori Lynn and Kirsten Zborek won the first event with a time of 1:44.03. In event two, junior Amelia Schilling took first place in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.43).<\/p>\n
Sophomore Samantha Stratford continued her success by winning three events on the afternoon, including the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Freshman Megan Vuong also won multiple events, finishing first in the 200 fly (2:02.95) and the 100 free (:51.83).<\/p>\n
Other first place finishers included Jennifer Coady (100 breast), McDermott (200 back), Gabbie Stecker (500 free) and Lynn (100 fly).<\/p>\n
On the boards, junior Olivia Kassouni improved on her 3-meter diving score from a week ago, registering a 299.03 in East Lansing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt we executed our details and race plans better than last week and that showed up to be the difference when we were in some very tight races,\u201d said Novitsky. \u201cIt is always tough to get a road win and now we have to go back and continue to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan State Press Release:<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Michigan State women\u2019s swimming & diving team fell to Illinois on Friday at the Charles McCaffree Pool, 182-118. The Spartans continued to shine on the boards, taking first in both heights.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought we did okay,\u201d said head coach\u00a0Matt Gianiodis. \u201cThey swam really well, give them credit. There were pockets that we were disappointing, specifically down the back part of the race. Going into the last walls, we just got beat. We didn\u2019t get blown out though, just got touched out. There were lot of areas I feel like we could have been better, but it is early and there is lot swimming ahead of us. We had a lot of good performances though.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Spartans (1-3, 0-3 B1G) were edged out in the meet\u2019s opener, the 200 medley relay. Junior Sarah Love\u2019s 23.24 paced the third leg to gain ground on the Illini, but MSU was unable to claw out the race, tapping the wall in 1:44.30.<\/p>\n
In the 1,000 freestyle, senior\u00a0Chelsea Abbott\u00a0took third with a 10:33.28. Sophomore\u00a0Rebecca Hannon\u00a0was in pursuit taking fourth with a time of 10:44.17. Abbott\u2019s day continued with the 500-meter freestyle, where she took fourth in 5:11.18. Sophomore\u00a0Haley Kornburger\u00a0led the Spartans in the 500, clocking a 5:11.11.<\/p>\n
Courtney Aycock\u00a0continued to pace MSU in the sprints as a freshman, clocking a 1:53.34 in the 200 freestyle to take third. Aycock went on to finish third in the 100 freestyle, as well, with a 52.26.<\/p>\n
Michigan State\u2019s first victory of the day came in the 100 backstroke thanks to a 56.48 clocked by sophomore\u00a0Madison Nowak. Freshman\u00a0Cathryn Armstrong\u00a0raced to a third-place finish in a time of 58.52. Nowak and Armstrong followed their performances in the 100 with strong showings in the 200. Nowak took second with an effort of 2:02.80, while Armstrong was fourth in a time of 2:07.48.<\/p>\n
The Spartans continued to find success on the boards, as junior\u00a0Madeline Sewell\u00a0and freshman\u00a0Julie Oppedisano\u00a0took first and second, respectively, on the 1-meter dive with scores of 299.10 and 276.6, both of which are NCAA qualifying scores.<\/p>\n
Sewell completed her sweep of the boards with a score of 325.05 in the 3-meter dive, again recording an NCAA qualifying effort. Freshman\u00a0Morgan Wellenzohn\u00a0took third with a tally of 277.12, as Oppedisano posted a mark of 209.62 for fifth.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is great,\u201d Gianiodis said of Sewell. \u201cShe is a team captain and a great performer. She performs well when we need her, and they (the divers) are all good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Junior\u00a0Kennedy Cutler\u00a0recorded a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke to score points for the Spartans. Cutler tapped the wall in 1:06.14. Freshman\u00a0Ana Sortland\u00a0placed fourth in 1:06.96.<\/p>\n
Michigan State rounded out the scoring in the 200 butterfly by finishing third, fourth and fifth. Senior\u00a0Elizabeth Brown\u00a0posted a mark of 2:03.9, while senior\u00a0Jessika Hall\u00a0and freshman Emily Burnett went 2:10.46 and 2:10.63, respectively.<\/p>\n
In the 100 butterfly, Love led MSU with a time of 56.59. Brown was the second Spartan to tap the wall, finishing in 57.51 to take fourth place, as Aycock clocked a 58.67 for sixth.<\/p>\n
The Spartans closed the deficit in the 50 freestyle by claiming two of the top three finishes. Sophomore\u00a0Racheal Bukowski\u00a0led the way with a 23.73, while Love was third with a time of 24.14.<\/p>\n
Brown paced MSU in the 200 medley, posting a second-place finish with a time of 2:07.72. Cutler took fourth with a 2:09.90.<\/p>\n
