SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, October 13. THE University of Utah women's swimming and diving team opened up the conference season on Saturday with a win over New Mexico. The Utes under first year head coach Greg Winslow started off 1-0 on the season with a 137-104 victory. <\/p>\n
The Utes trailed the Lobos early in the meet and needed a strong finish to overcome the deficit. Utah won the final six events to take the lead and come out with the victory. The 200 medley relay team of Beth Gunderson, Kelly McIntyre, Caitlin Tidwell and Jessica Moon started off the day by beating New Mexico by .1 seconds with their time of 1:52.46. <\/p>\n
Utah got strong performances from several key girls as Jennifer Fredsall won the 100 fly (58.69), freshman Natalie Edge won the 100 free (53.89), Shannon McQueen earned a victory in the 100 back (59.72), Adrienne Coburn won the 500 free (5:16.37) and Caitlin Tidwell placed first in the 100 breast (1:08.23). <\/p>\n
The girls put the finishing touches on the victory with the team of Edge, McQueen, Fredsall and Annie VanLeeuwen winning the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.56. <\/p>\n
BYU also competed in a dual meet with New Mexico at the same time, however the Utes and Cougars did not compete against each other for a score. <\/p>\n
"I'm excited with what I saw today from our girls," comments Winslow. "We swam hard and showed a lot of heart coming from behind to get the victory. This was a well coached New Mexico team and it's a step in the right direction for us." <\/p>\n
The next meet for Utah will be in Denver, Colorado on October 26, as the Utes face Arkansas and Denver. <\/p>\n
