LAS VEGAS, Nevada, October 13. THREE Rebels won two events each to help the UNLV men's swimming and diving team beat Arizona State for the second time in the last three years, as UNLV topped ASU 158.5-141.5 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Buchanan Natatorium. In the women's meet, the Sun Devils posted a 205-95 win over UNLV. <\/p>\n
Arizona State won two of the first three events of the afternoon to hold a slight 30-25 edge, but the Rebels would win the next six events to establish a 20-point edge. One of the keys on the afternoon was UNLV's performance in the fly events, as the Rebels went 1-2-3 in the 200 fly, and followed that with a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly, and they claimed second in the last two events (200 IM, 400 free relay) to seal the victory. <\/p>\n
Richard Hortness staked his claim as the Rebels top sprinter in 2007-08 by winning both the 50 free (20.86) and the 100 free (46.00). Devin Phillips won the 100 and 200 backs, in times of 50.85 and 1:51.75, respectively, while freshman Davie Seiler swept the fly events (50.80 in the 100, 1:52.21 in the 200). Jonas Andersson just missed joining his teammates with two wins, as he won the 100 breast in 56.53, and was second in the 200 breast in 2:03.72, just .05 behind ASU's CJ Nuess. The Rebels' other win came in the 200 medley relay, as Phillips, Andersson, Peter Lorring, and Hortness teamed up to swim a time of 1:32.16. <\/p>\n
On the women's side, the Rebels came through with one event-winner, Kim Bonney in the 200 breast (2:21.63). Wendy Williams placed second on both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, while Marva Harpak took second in both the 500 and 1000 free. Also earning second-place finishes were Megan Hunt-Higgins (50 free, 100 back), Bailey Kuestermeyer (200 breast, 200 IM), Marina Sandback (100 fly) and Bonney in the 100 breast. <\/p>\n
