AFTER putting together a sizzling 1500 free yesterday en route to both the metric mile and 800 free world records over short course meters (for complete coverage, click  <a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/15744.asp>here<\/a>), Kate Ziegler settled in with another gold medal at the Alex Athletics Jubilaums Challenge held in Essen, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>This time, Ziegler easily won the 400 free with a time of 4:03.41, just two seconds off her personal best time of 4:01.79 set at the 2006 Short Course World Championships.  Additionally, France&#39;s Laure Manaudou held on to one of her short course meter global standards, as her 3:56.09 held up.<\/p>\n<p>Meike Freitag placed second in the race with a time of 4:11.64, while Cathleen Rund took third in 4:21.29.<\/p>\n<p>In the next event, Jeanette Luster touched first in the women&#39;s 200 fly with a time of 2:18.28, just ahead of Alina Polplatz&#39;s second-place time of 2:18.76.  Denise Moller finished third in 2:23.41.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#39;s 200 fly, Dennis da Silva captured the title in 2:06.29, while Bjorn Koch (2:07.08) and Melvin Herrmann (2:07.27) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50 breaststroke events, Kerstin Vogel topped all women with a time of 31.46, while Manuel Stiem did the same for the men with a time of 29.56.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Lurz claimed his second gold medal of the meet with a win in the men&#39;s 400 free.  He clocked a time of 4:21.75, to far surpass Julian Jungbluth (4:35.49) and Stiem (4:36.55).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 backstroke, Jenny Mensing captured the women&#39;s title in 1:01.24, just ahead of Christin Zenner (1:01.68) and Xenia Madziarska (1:03.47), while German record-holder Thomas Rupprath easily won the men&#39;s gold in 52.29.  Steffen Driesen (55.45) and Gabriel Mangabeira (55.70) took second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 IM, Rund picked up the win in 2:17.73 from the women&#39;s field that included Jessica Stieger (2:19.78) and Ozlem Taskin (2:23.57) finishing 2-3.  Meanwhile, Jens Schreiber won the men&#39;s 200 free in 1:48.29, with Christoph Fildebrandt (1:49.79) and Jan Wolfgarten (1:50.59) taking second and third.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50 freestyle, Freitag paced the women with a time of 25.63, while Schreiber won amongst the men with a time of 22.89.<\/p>\n<p>Vogel claimed her second breaststroke event of the day with a time of 1:09.41 in the 100, while Rebecca Horstmann (1:12.12) and Carolin Rademacher (1:12.19) rounded out the top three.  For the men, Troy Arnicke won in 1:04.03, ahead of Stiem (1:04.81) and Eduard Alboni (1:05.00).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in the 100 IMs, Zenner won the women&#39;s title in 1:05.66, in front of Kerstin Lange (1:06.64) and Christina Kotzur (1:07.67), while Rupprath claimed his second title of the day with a time of 54.26, while Marco Di Carli (57.87) and Stiem (1:00.70) closed out the top three.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/sgessen101307.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ESSEN, Germany, October 13.
