Laramie, Wyoming, October 12. THE Wyoming swimming and diving team opened the 2007-08 season in style on Friday as the Cowgirls won the Denver Relays and the Cowboys placed second at El Pomar Natatorium on the University of Denver campus in Denver, Colo.<\/p>\n
"We enjoyed beginning the season with a meet like this," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We saw it all today- some good, some bad and some ugly. We did some things really well but we also found some areas where we need to improve. However, that is what you want from a meet like this, the opportunity to see things you don't see everyday in practice. I thought the most important thing is that we got to race against someone other than ourselves. This meet will prepare us for the next few weeks."<\/p>\n
After falling behind early, the Cowgirls battled back to win the women's side of the meet with 116 team points. They finished ahead of Denver (110), Air Force (52), the Colorado School of Mines (27) and Mesa State (21). The Cowboys finished second behind Denver with 95 team points. Denver's men tallied a total of 127 points.<\/p>\n
The Cowgirls won three relay events on the day including the 300 breaststroke (3:18.62), the 400 medley 4×100 (4:05.18) and the 400 freestyle (3:34.82). Megan Evans, Lesley Young and Kaella Hartigan swam the 300 breaststroke. Swimming the 400 medley 4×100 was Evans, Young, Erin Wagner and Hartigan while Aimee Stinson, Cassie Stelow, Evans and Stephanie Vint swam the 400 freestyle. <\/p>\n
The Cowboys won a pair of events in the meet including the 300 breaststroke relay (2:55.22) and the 100 medley relay (44.86). Alex Larkin, Levi Bell and David Schmitt swam the breaststroke and Devin Hougardy, Larkin, James Rigg and Jamie Comrie swam the medley relay.<\/p>\n
The UW swimming and diving team will compete in its first invitational meet next Saturday when they travel to the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational. The invite will run all day at Moby Pool in Fort Collins, Colo. <\/p>\n
