\tTeam USA continued asserting its entitlement to the top spot in this week\u2019s Holiday Cup by defeating Russia, 13-7 in pool play. The win was USA\u2019s third in a row.
\n\tCoralie Simmons buried three goals for the third consecutive night, giving her a tournament-high nine for the week. Ericka Lorenz also put away three on the day, two through Russia\u2019s three-goalie defense.
\n\tThe U.S. led 4-1 after the first quarter, thanks in large part to Lorenz and Simmons, each with two goals apiece. After a relatively quiet second quarter, in which Russia outscored the U.S., 3-1, Guy \u201cBaker\u2019s Dozen\u201d took their \u2018A\u2019 game to the pool.
\n\tA third quarter explosion by the U.S. saw goals from Heather Moody, Brenda Villa, Julie Swail, Lorenz and Simmons. The Russians did manage one score in the third, on Svetlana Kouzina\u2019s second goal.
\n\tBernice Orwig was solid in goal for Team USA, collecting eight saves on the night. <\/p>\n

\tCanada handed Kazakhstan its third loss in three games, behind a four goal performance by Johanne Begin.
\nKazakhstan converted on only three of eight extra-man advantages, while Canada cashed in on five of eight.
\nKazakhstan goalkeeper Svetlana Buravova tallied seven saves in the loss. With the win, Canada moves above the .500 mark in the tournament at 2-1, while Kazakhstan drops to 0-3. <\/p>\n

\tWorld champion Netherlands still isn\u2019t playing its best ball. Another loss on Thursday, this time to Australia, dropped the Netherlands to 1-2 on the week. Meanwhile, Australia gets bumped to 2-1, its only loss coming to the U.S. on Wednesday.
\n\tThe Australia offense was anchored by Naomi Castle, who scored two goals on the day. The Netherlands\u2019 Danielle de Bruijn scored two more, giving her seven for the tournament.
\n\tNetherlands led 3-2, until the third quarter when a goal by Australia\u2019s Bronwyn Mayer knotted it up at 3-3. Netherlands pushed ahead again with 2:15 remaining in the period when Ellen van der Weijden found the back of the net. However, that would be the last time that the champions would lead. Successive goals by Yvette Higgins and Gail Miller put Australia up 6-4 early in the fourth quarter and the Netherlands was unable to recover.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
