COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, September 25. JAROD Schroeder has been named interim head coach for men's and women's swimming for the 2007-08 season, senior associate athletics director Michael Lipitz announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Schroeder, who is beginning his second season in the Maryland program, was the top assistant last year to Dave Durden, who left the Terrapins to become the head coach for the men's team at California.<\/p>\n
"I'm very excited to be given the opportunity to continue moving this program forward," said Schroeder. "We have a great group of talented student-athletes here at Maryland. Working together as a team, we have the opportunity to be very successful this season."<\/p>\n
Schroeder came to the University of Maryland after five seasons at Northwestern, where he was part of a perennial top-25 program. There, he coached several U.S. National finalists, as well as NCAA and Olympic Trials finalists.<\/p>\n
As a student-athlete, Schroeder was an accomplished swimmer in his own right. He was co-captain of the 1999 U.S. Pan-Am games team, where he won a pair of silver medals. He earned three awards as the Mid-America Conference Swimmer of the Year during his time at Northern Illinois University, where he graduated in 1995.<\/p>\n
Lipitz said the national search for a permanent head coach will resume in the spring. <\/p>\n
"We've made the decision to hire a new head coach during a time of year when the strongest pool of candidates will be available to us," said Lipitz.<\/p>\n
Schroeder's technical and teaching ability helped make the decision to elevate him to the interim head coaching spot, according to Lipitz.<\/p>\n
"We're fortunate to have a coach of Jarod's ability on staff to lead our team this year," said Lipitz. "We're excited for the upcoming season and look forward to successfully concluding the coaching search next semester."<\/p>\n
