OTTAWA, Ontario, September 24. SWIMMING Canada announced today the appointment of Tom Johnson of Vancouver, B.C. as the head coach for the 2008 Olympic Games Swim Team. <\/p>\n

Johnson, who currently is the head coach at the National Swimming Center in Vancouver, coached swimmer Brent Hayden (Mission, B.C.) to a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne Australia. Hayden was also part of the bronze medal 800 freestyle relay with UBC Dolphins teammate Brian Johns (Richmond, B.C.), also coached by Johnson.<\/p>\n

"We are very honored to have Tom take on the position of head coach for the 2008 Olympic team," said Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada. "Tom has shown great leadership as head coach of the 2007 World Championship Team. His experience and involvement within Canadian swimming will have a positive influence on the swimmers and coaches headed to Beijing."<\/p>\n

Johnson has one of the most impressive coaching records in Canadian swimming. He's been named to Canada's coaching staff at seven Olympic Games, nine World Championships and eight Commonwealth Games. Nationally, his clubs have won 15 overall national team titles and 21 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Crowns (12 for men and nine for women).<\/p>\n
