{"id":155099,"date":"2015-10-03T16:28:48","date_gmt":"2015-10-03T23:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=155099"},"modified":"2015-10-03T17:06:53","modified_gmt":"2015-10-04T00:06:53","slug":"usc-outlasts-cal-poly-152-104","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usc-outlasts-cal-poly-152-104\/","title":{"rendered":"USC Outlasts Cal Poly 152-104"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off a win over UC-Santa Barbara, the USC men continued their success with a win over the men of Cal Poly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>USC Press Release:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sophomores Pawel Furtek and Jon Knox and junior Michael Domagala each won twice to lead the USC men\u2019s swimming team to a 152-104 win at Cal Poly\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1413094493\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Saturday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(Oct. 3).<\/p>\n<p>USC, which improves to 2-0, opened the meet with a win in the 400y medley relay as senior Morten Klarskov, junior Steven Stumph, senior Maclin Davis and Domagala won in 3:21.87.<\/p>\n<p>Furtek won the 500y (4:34.05) and the 1000y free in 9:23.12. Furtek edged senior teammate Ted Singley (4:35.68) in the shorter distance.<\/p>\n<p>Domagala swept the butterfly races. He claimed the 100y fly in 49.20 and edged Singley in the 200y fly, 1:50.91 to 1:51.15. Knox won the 100y (50.74) and 200y back (1:51.66).<\/p>\n<p>Junior Reed Malone, who won twice at UC Santa Barbara\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1413094494\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Friday<\/span><\/span>, won the 200y free in 1:39.87 while sophomore teammate Jason O\u2019Brien was second (1:42.81).<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore David Morgan Jr. won the 100y breast (57.35), freshman Kyle Grissom (21.21) and Davis (21.31) went 1-2 in the 50y free and Klarskov won the 100y free (45.48). Sophomore Jonah Hu won the 200y breast in 2:02.24, touching just ahead of Stumph\u2019s 2:02.56.<\/p>\n<p>USC closed the meet with a 1:23.40 in the 200y free relay from Morgan Jr., Grissom, Klarskov and Domagala.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cal Poly Press Release:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite 15 Top-3 three event finishes on Saturday afternoon, the Cal Poly men\u2019s swimming team was defeated by Southern California, 152-104, during the first dual meet of the season at the Anderson Aquatic Center. Senior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/mackle_mickey_9yiv\">Mickey Mackle<\/a>\u00a0(pictured) recorded the fastest 400-yard IM time of 4:01.35, as Cal Poly received 13 individual Top-3 times against the Trojans.<\/p>\n<p>Complete dual meet results are available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/files\/results_cp_vs_usc.pdf\" target=\"_self\">HERE.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Southern Cal sophomore Pawel Furtek won two individual events, including the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:23.12 and the 500 free with a mark of 4:34.05.<\/p>\n<p>The Cal Poly quartet of freshman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/dalpiaz_dominic_5rn5\">Dominic Dalpiaz<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/folkner_dominik_12ue\">Dominik Folkner<\/a>, junior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/davies_caleb_wdpr\">Caleb Davies<\/a>\u00a0and senior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/faris_blake_93la\">Blake Faris<\/a>\u00a0raced to the best 200-yard freestyle relay mark of 1:25.33, nearly four full seconds ahead of the next closest competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Cal Poly sophomore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/cootes_zach_tz5h\">Zach Cootes<\/a>\u00a0collected two top-three finishes, including the second-quickest 100-yard fly time of 51.25 and the third-best 200-yard fly mark of 1:51.73.<\/p>\n<p>Davies collected two individual top-three performances against Southern Cal, including a 46.35 time during the 100-yard free (good for second overall) and a 50-free mark of 21.31 (third overall).<\/p>\n<p>Cal Poly sophomore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/nguyen_brandon_w2jz\">Brandon Nguyen<\/a>\u00a0placed second during the 100-yard breast with a time of 57.94 and third overall in the 200-yard breast with a mark of 2:08.85.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs earned third overall in the 400-yard medley relay, as the foursome of Mackle, Davies and freshman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/whittington_brian_h25y\">Brian Whittington<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/yi_edward_f0va\">Edward Yi<\/a>completed a time of 3:28.72.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, Cal Poly freshman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/mitchell_archie_k7lp\">Archie Mitchell<\/a>\u00a0finished second overall in the 1000-yard free with a mark of 9:40.48, sophomore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/pold_pearu_0vk4\">Pearu Pold<\/a>\u00a0used a 9:42.19 time in the 1000-yard free to capture third, and Mackle cemented third place in the 200-yard free with a time of 52.75. Mitchell also earned third in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:40.10 and Cal Poly freshman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/schmid_garrett_ruyv\">Garrett Schmid<\/a>\u00a0used a 1:54.81 time in the 200-yard back to finish second overall in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Mustang freshman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gopoly.com\/sports\/swimdive\/2015-16\/bios\/hemmens_hayden_732c\">Hayden Hemmens<\/a>\u00a0took third overall in the 200-yard free with a mark of 1:43.50.<\/p>\n<p>Cal Poly hosts its annual Green and Gold Intrasquad Meet at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Anderson Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh off a win over UC-Santa Barbara, the USC men continued their success with a win over the men of Cal Poly.
