BANGKOK, Thailand, August 12. UKRAINE's Yana Klochkova put on a show in the women's 400 IM to highlight the fourth night of swimming at the World University Games.<\/p>\n
Men's 400 freestyle<\/b>
\nRomania's Dragos Coman went out fast enough to be able to hold off a late surge by the United States' Michael Klueh when Coman touched in a Games-record time of 3:48.29. Klueh wrapped up second place in 3:49.10.<\/p>\n
Coman pushed his lead out to nearly four seconds at the 300-meter mark, 2:49.89 to 2:53.31, but Klueh made a mad dash to get back into it with splits of 28.87 and 26.92 in the final two 50s.<\/p>\n
Russia's Yury Prilukov closed out the top three in 3:49.19.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 IM<\/b>
\nUkraine's Yana Klochkova cut two seconds off her previous season-best with a Games-record time of 4:37.50. That moved her into third in the world this year and all-time behind only Katie Hoff (4:32.89) and Alessia Filippi (4:37.03).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the United States' Kaitlin Sandeno grabbed second in 4:41.57, while China's Zhang Xin placed third in 4:42.49.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 butterfly<\/b>
\nCanada's Darryl Rudolf put together a strong overall race to win in 52.89. Japan's Takashi Tomiyama finished second in 52.97, while Ukraine's Sergiy Breus took third in 53.01.<\/p>\n
While Rudolf did not own the fastest split going out or coming home, he had the most consistent with times of 24.84 and 28.05. Breus went out the quickest with a 24.34 split, while fifth-place Corney Swanepoel of New Zealand recorded the quickest back half with a 27.78 en route to a 53.14.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 backstroke<\/b>
\nJapan's Aya Terakawa surfaced from a competitive top three in the women's 100 back. She clocked a winning time of 1:01.50, while Ukraine's Kateryna Zubkova finished second in 1:01.67. China's Chen Yanyan wound up third in 1:01.89.<\/p>\n
Notably, Brooke Bishop stopped the clock fourth in 1:02.11 for the United States.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 backstroke<\/b>
\nGermany's Helge Meeuw touched out Austria's Markus Rogan, 54.21 to 54.27, to claim the men's 100 back title. However, Meeuw set the Universiade record with a time of 54.06 during prelims to move into ninth in the world this year.<\/p>\n
The United States' Nicholas Thoman completed the top three with a time of 54.62.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 freestyle<\/b>
\nItaly's Federica Pellegrini captured the women's 200 free title with a readout of 1:57.67. While the time now stands as a Games record, it still remains a bit off Pellegrini's top time this year of 1:56.47, which is the fourth-best in the world.<\/p>\n
Slovenia's Sara Isakovic touched just behind Pellegrini with a second-place 1:58.19, while the United States' Kate Dwelley finished third in 1:59.35. Additionally, Erin Reilly turned in a fifth-place 2:00.03 for the United States.<\/p>\n
Men's 800 freestyle relay<\/b>
\nThe United States' squad of Matt McGinnis (1:49.14), Adam Ritter (1:47.44), Doug Van Wie (1:48.46) and Michael Klueh (1:48.68) set a Universiade record with a time of 7:13.72.<\/p>\n
Russia's foursome of Evgeniy Lagunov, Sergey Perunin, Nikita Lobintsev and Yury Prilukov finished second in 7:16.20, while Italy's team of Andrea Busato, Michele Cosentino, Andrea Giavi and Nicola Cassio took third in 7:17.93.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
