John Mullen, DPT, CSCS<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0swimmers experience triceps soreness as they return to training. Soreness is an appropriate response to a new training stimuli, suggesting muscle breakdown. Unfortunately, soreness can greatly impair training and stroke biomechanics, increasing one&#8217;s risk of injury.<\/p>\n<p>Self myofascial releases (SMR, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingscience.net\/2014\/01\/mobilityforswimmers.html\">Mobility for Swimmers<\/a> for more SMR techniques) can reduce soreness and early research suggests SMR doesn&#8217;t impair force production like static stretching (MacDonald 2012). See past\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>articles for more information on SMR:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"r\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ultimate-guide-fixing-swimmers-posture\/\">The Ultimate Guide To Fixing Swimmers Posture<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"r\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-science-recapping-what-we-learned-in-2013\/\">Recapping What We Learned in 2013<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Improve Triceps Soreness with the Triceps SMR<\/h3>\n<p>For beginners, take a baseball or tennis ball and place it against a wall. Next, lean your triceps into the wall while facing away from the wall. You may want to stabilize the ball with your hand, to avoid the ball from popping out.<\/p>\n<p>If this method isn&#8217;t effective, consider setting up a heavy bar on a rack, approximately chest height.
