{"id":153752,"date":"2015-09-16T16:55:49","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T23:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=153752"},"modified":"2015-09-16T16:55:49","modified_gmt":"2015-09-16T23:55:49","slug":"national-swimming-pool-foundation-celebrates-its-50th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/national-swimming-pool-foundation-celebrates-its-50th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"National Swimming Pool Foundation Celebrates its 50th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colorado Springs, COLORADO, September 16, 2015 \u2013 The <a href=\"http:\/\/nspf.org\/en\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">National Swimming Pool Foundation<\/a>\u00ae celebrates\u00a0its 50th year in 2015 and sets goals to further keep aquatics safer and create more swimmers. The Foundation will\u00a0commemorate the event at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewahc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Aquatic HealthTM Conference<\/a> on October 7, 2015 in Arizona at the Desert\u00a0Foothills.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the 1960s, there was an explosion of interest in swimming pools thanks to the prosperity created after\u00a0World War II and advances in plastic materials and disinfection. As the pool and spa industry grew, a group of\u00a0visionary leaders, the National Spa &amp; Pool Institute, realized a need for an educational organization to research\u00a0and supplement practical aquatic knowledge for the industry. In 1965, that organization became the National\u00a0Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF\u00ae), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, with the original mission to receive and maintain\u00a0funds to use for scientific and educational purposes which would influence the design, construction, and operation\u00a0of swimming pools and spas.<\/p>\n<p>The seventies were a good year for the pool industry and the NSPF. As pools were becoming larger and more\u00a0unique, the NSPF developed a mail-in correspondence course, which after successful completion, one received\u00a0the Certified Pool\/Spa Operator\u00ae (CPO\u00ae) Certification. The CPO Certification is to this day, the NSPF\u2019s most\u00a0popular creation as it has resulted in more than 400,000 successful CPO certifications in nearly 100 countries!\u00a0This program is designed to provide individuals with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nspf.org\/en\/cpo.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">basic knowledge<\/a>, techniques, and skills needed to\u00a0operate pools and spas.<\/p>\n<p>When the nineties arrived, consumer\u2019s wanted lower maintenance pools with higher quality automatic cleaners,\u00a0control systems, and safety devices such as pool alarms and safety covers. A higher standard was also\u00a0implemented in the NSPF, as then-CEO <strong>Mr. Les Kowalsky<\/strong> required pool operators to train and recertify every\u00a0five years to have a valid CPO Certification. With this raised standard, the Certified Pool\/Spa Operator\u00a0Certification gained both popularity and credibility throughout the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Many changes occurred when the new millennial began, the National Swimming Pool Foundation moved from\u00a0Texas (distribution) and New York (headquarters) to Colorado Springs in 2002. A year later, <strong>Thomas Lachocki,\u00a0Ph.D.<\/strong>, was appointed the new CEO with experience in areas of chemistry, research, education, and business\u00a0development. With Lachocki\u2019s appointment, the NSPF reinvented itself with the goal of creating more value for\u00a0the non-profit\u2019s customers.<\/p>\n<p>Not a year later, and the NSPF released the new, full-color,\u00a0indexed, and updated Pool\/Spa OperatorTM Handbook. The board\u00a0hired longtime NSPF instructor, <strong>Ronald Ford<\/strong>, to update the\u00a0handbook, which resulted in a 30 percent increase in those\u00a0achieving their CPO certification by the next year. In 2004 the\u00a0annual World Aquatic HealthTM Conference was launched by the\u00a0NSPF as an unrivaled educational and networking event for the\u00a0aquatics field.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, <strong>Alex Antoniou<\/strong> was hired on as the Foundation&#8217;s\u00a0first Director of Educational Programs. At the time, there was\u00a0only one course, the two-day CPO certification program; once\u00a0Antoniou came on, the NSPF\u2019s portfolio grew quickly and many\u00a0\u201cfirsts\u201d were launched. The nonprofit was the first in the industry to present a comprehensive series of online\u00a0training programs that focused on specialized programs in aquatics, like the Certified Pool\/Spa Inspector, Aquatic\u00a0Play Feature, and 60 other courses. The NSPF was also first to fund creation of a science-based, free Model\u00a0Aquatic Health Code, which is now published by the Centers for Disease Control &amp; Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>By 2006 the NSPF\u2019s international efforts expanded with the release of a Spanish Pool &amp; Spa Operator\u00ae handbook.\u00a0A year later a French version was printed and ready for the masses. During this time of tremendous innovation,\u00a0the NSPF reinvested about $4 million in research grants. The research focused on helping keep pools safer from\u00a0drowning, illness, injury and chemical exposure. Additionally, pools are able to remain open thanks to research\u00a0that is focused on the documentation of how immersion and water activity can benefit an individual\u2019s health, thus\u00a0creating better promotion within the field. In 2007 the Pool Operator PrimerTM online course and Pool Operator\u00a0FusionTM classroom course was introduced as a blended <a href=\"http:\/\/nspf.org\/en\/CPO\/CPOBlended.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">learning course<\/a> that resulted in a CPO Certification after\u00a0both the portions are successfully completed. Two years later, the NSPF partnered with the American Red Cross\u00a0and created the Home Pool EssentialsTM, an online course that teaches backyard pool safety and maintenance for\u00a0home owners.<\/p>\n<p>Initiatives were then taken in 2009 as the NSPF\u2019s new mission became \u201cTo encourage healthier living by\u00a0increasing aquatic activity through education and research.\u201d To complement this new mission, the NSPF initiated\u00a0the 10 year Step Into SwimTM campaign to create one million more swimmers. The goal being to reduce drowning,\u00a0improve health, and build demand for our field.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the pool and spa industry continues to grow\u00a0while the National Swimming Pool Foundation\u00a0remains committed to furthering advances in research\u00a0to demonstrate how aquatic activity creates healthier\u00a0lives. The continued growth and development of the\u00a0organization means constant evolution for the\u00a0industry. Recently, the NSPF became a sponsor of\u00a0Swim Today, a campaign that is meant to give a new\u00a0splash of initiative to the sport of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimtoday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">swimming for youths<\/a>. Since 2003, the organization has grown from\u00a0three employees to 19 to better keep up with the\u00a0flourishing needs of the industry. The NSPF looks\u00a0forward to support initiatives that help to keep pools\u00a0safer and keep pools open, to assure that the future of\u00a0aquatics is more accessible to the people who enjoy the\u00a0benefits of getting into the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe innovations we have created has resulted in 12 consecutive years of mission-focused training-program\u00a0growth. As a result, we are able to give back to prevent bad things and to promote good things,\u201d stated CEO Tom\u00a0Lachocki. \u201cAll we ask is that everyone in our field train their staff.
