EVEN though it is Thursday, we&#39;re officially in the midst of hump day at the USA Swimming National Championships as day three roared through preliminary competition in the 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nKatie Hoff of North Baltimore Aquatics topped qualifying with a time of 4:07.75 out of the second-to-last heat, just ahead of Kate Ziegler&#39;s time of 4:07.77.<\/p>\n<p>Leah Gingrich of WSY Swimming placed third in 4:11.77, while Cal&#39;s Ashley Chandler finished fourth in 4:11.87.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn&#39;s Jessica Rodriquez (4:11.89), Sierra Marlins&#39; Alyssa Anderson (4:13.79), Great Britain&#39;s Hannah Miley (4:14.10) and Lakeside&#39;s Caroline Burckle (4:14.66) rounded out the championship heat qualifiers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsw400freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 400 freestyle<\/b><br \/>\nClub Wolverine made up four out of the top eight finishers in the men&#39;s 400 freestyle.  Peter Vanderkaay and Erik Vendt pushed each other into the top two spots with a fairly heated prelim battle.  Vanderkaay won with a 3:48.59, while Vendt placed second in 3:48.89.  Teammate Michael Phelps rounded out the top three in 3:50.31, while Trojan Swim&#39;s Larsen Jensen took fourth in 3:50.39.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#39;s David Carry (3:50.86), Trojan&#39;s Klete Keller (3:51.78), Club Wolverine&#39;s Charlie Houchin (3:52.32) and Great Britain&#39;s Dean Milwain (3:52.79) made up the rest of the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsm400freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nTop-seeded Rachel Komisarz grabbed the No. 1 seed for the championship final as the only swimmer to crack the 59-second barrier. Komisarz touched in 58.91 to narrowly post the fastest time of the morning. She was followed in the second spot by Dana Vollmer, who registered an effort of 59.00. The third-fastest qualifier was Christine Magnuson in 59.21.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Woodward (59.22) and Caitlin Andrew (59.55) occupied the next two positions and the field for the final was rounded out by Mary DeScenza (59.72), Kathleen Hersey (59.83) and Kim Vandenberg (59.97). Felicia Lee headlines the consolation final behind a time of 59.98. Hersey won this event at the Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsw100flyp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 100 Butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nWorld-record holder Ian Crocker led qualifying in his prime event, going 52.53 in the last of 15 heats. From Longhorn Aquatics, Crocker owns the fastest time in history at 50.40 and was the silver medalist earlier this year at the World Championships. He was followed in the second position by Stanford&#39;s Ben Wildman-Tobriner (52.53). Jayme Cramer (Southeastern) was third in 52.78.<\/p>\n<p>World and Olympic champion Michael Phelps, not long after qualifying third in the 400 freestyle, was fourth in this event with a time of 52.87.
