THE first day of swimming began with a bang at USA Swimming&#39;s National Championships held in the Circle City this week.  Heading into the final 50 meters of the first heat of the women&#39;s 200 fly, the lights blew out in the building.  Luckily, only the next two heats went on without a scoreboard.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nDana Vollmer topped qualifying with a time of 2:09.82, while Kim Vandenberg grabbed second in 2:10.03.<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen Hersey, coming off an incredible meet at Pan Ams, finished third in 2:11.33, while Mary DeScenza (2:11.39) and Tanya Krisman (2:12.07) took fourth and fifth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa Crippen, also just returning from Pan Ams in Rio, placed sixth in 2:12.58, while Karie Haglund (2:13.15) and Bridget O&#39;Connor (2:13.25) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsw200flyp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 butterfly<\/b><br \/>\nWith world record holder Michael Phelps swimming some off events this week, the door swung wide open for plenty of swimmers to jump at the 200 fly title.  Gil Stovall posted the fastest time of the morning with a time of 1:57.48.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Erazo, who is emerging as a strong swimmer in the event, placed second in 1:58.20, while Jeremy Knowles finished third in 1:58.34.<\/p>\n<p>Teammates Davis Tarwater (1:58.40) and Matt Patton (1:59.49) took fourth and fifth, while Juan Veloz (1:59.68), Tyler McGill (2:00.22) and Tim Hughes (2:00.23) comprised the rest of the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, a tired Ricky Berens off a run in the Pan Am Games touched just out of the top eight with a ninth-place time of 2:00.28.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsm200flyp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nRebecca Soni paced the field in the morning heats with a time of 2:28.37, while Caitlin Leverenz finished second in 2:29.24.  Keri Hehn closed out the sub-2:30 efforts with a third-place 2:29.80.<\/p>\n<p>Megan Jendrick picked up the fourth seed with a readout of 2:30.30, while Anne Poleska (2:30.82) and Kaitlin O&#39;Brien (2:30.85) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Schmitt (2:31.18) and Sara Nordenstam (2:31.25) completed the rest of the championship final.<\/p>\n<p>Tara Kirk missed her shot at swimming for the title with a 10th-place 2:32.21.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsw200breastp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 breaststroke<\/b><br \/>\nWorld record holder Brendan Hansen easily won the preliminary heats with a time of 2:11.50.  His teammate Eric Shanteau earned the second seed in 2:13.33, while Scott Usher placed third in 2:13.40.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Bree (2:13.44), Sean Mahoney (2:13.55) and Paul Zaich (2:13.83) all went under 2:14 to finish the top six. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Neil Versfeld (2:14.26) and Scott Spann (2:14.90) made up the rest of the A final.<\/p>\n<p>Notable misses for the championship final are Mike Alexandrov with a ninth-place 2:14.95 and Michael Phelps, who broke his personal-best time with an 11th-place 2:15.81.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsm200breastp.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 freestyle slower heats<\/b><br \/>\nClub Wolverine&#39;s Emily Brunemann set the time to beat with an 8:37.77 in the women&#39;s slower 800 freestyle heats.  Ashley Chandler clocked the second-fastest time with a readout of 8:40.68, while Yuen Kobayashi placed third in 8:43.09.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/65.110.72.225\/SPIPDF\/2007usaswimmingnatsw800freep.pdf target=_blank>Click here to view event results PDF file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 1500 freestyle slower heats<\/b><br \/>\nLogan Storie and Joe Kinderwater battled in the final of the preliminary heats of the men&#39;s metric mile.
