Women’s 50 back semis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia’s Minna Atherton<\/strong> unleashed a World Junior record in the women’s 50-meter back semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Atherton blasted her way to a 27.92 in semis to lower her own record of 28.00 from prelims.<\/p>\n

That swim put her 10th in the world rankings this year as she continues to drive\u00a0towards the world record of 27.06 set by Zhao Jing<\/strong> back in 2009.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s Gabrielle Fa’Amausili<\/strong> qualified second in 28.14 with Canada’s Danielle Hanus<\/strong> snaring the third seed in 28.27.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s Bobbi Gichard<\/strong> (28.57), Russia’s Irina Prikhodko<\/strong> (28.76), Germany’s Laura Riedemann<\/strong> (28.86), South Africa’s Mariella Venter<\/strong> (28.88) and USA’s Grace Ariola<\/strong> (28.94) also earned transfer spots into the finale.<\/p>\n

Czech’s Tereza Grusova<\/strong> then beat Austria’s Caroline Pilhatsch<\/strong> for the first alternate spot in a swimoff, 29.12 to 29.23.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 breast finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia’s Anton Chupkov<\/strong> was at it again, this time with a meet record time in the men’s 200-meter breast finals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Chupkov raced his way to a winning effort of 2:10.19 in the finale. \u00a0That swim broke his own mark of 2:10.73 set earlier in the meet, but fell short of his World Junior record of 2:09.64 clocked at Worlds.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Matthew Wilson<\/strong> placed second tonight in 2:11.23 with Japan’s Ippei Miyamoto<\/strong> claiming third overall in 2:11.59.<\/p>\n

USA’s Reece Whitley<\/strong> wound up fourth in 2:12.71, while Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> earned fifth in 2:13.05.<\/p>\n

USA’s Chandler Bray<\/strong> (2:15.00), Great Britain’s Charlie Attwood<\/strong> (2:15.04) and Austria’s Christopher Rothbauer<\/strong> (2:16.53) closed out the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 fly finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japan’s Rikako Ikee<\/strong> just missed the World Junior record with a meet mark in the women’s 50-meter fly finale at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Ikee scorched the finale with a time of 26.28, breaking her own mark of 26.30 from yesterday.<\/p>\n

That time came up just short of Rozaliya Nasretdinova’s<\/strong> World Junior record of 26.28 set at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> continued her strong meet with another silver as she touched in 26.45.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> rounded out the podium with a third-place effort of 26.47.<\/p>\n

China’s Wang Jingzhuo<\/strong> (26.51), Australia’s Lucia Lassman<\/strong> (26.86), Australia’s Gemma Cooney<\/strong> (26.97), Slovakia’s Barbora Misendova<\/strong> (27.00) and Hungary’s Szonja Szokol<\/strong> (27.37) comprised the rest of the championship field.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 back finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA’s Michael Andrew<\/strong> cranked out a near-World Junior record time with a meet record in the men’s 50-meter back at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Andrew hit the wall in 25.13 for the victory, breaking his own mark of 25.14 set yesterday.<\/p>\n

That time just missed Evgeny Rylov’s<\/strong> World Junior record of 25.09 from the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China from last summer.<\/p>\n

It was a strong response for Andrew following a disappointing early start to the meet for Andrew that featured a five-swim night on the second evening of swimming.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Javier Acevedo<\/strong> raced his way to silver in 25.46, while Egypt’s Mohamed Samy and Venezuela’s Robinson Molina<\/strong> shared bronze with matching 25.54s.<\/p>\n

Egypt’s Youssef Abdalla<\/strong> (25.63), Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> (25.75), Greece’s Nikolaos Sofianidis<\/strong> (25.79) and Russia’s Roman Larin<\/strong> (26.13) finished fifth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 breast finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes<\/strong> continued to be one of the top swimmers at the meet with a convincing win in the women’s 100-meter breast at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Gunes, who nearly took down Ruta Meilutyte’s<\/strong> vaunted meet record of 1:06.61 from 2013, won the finale in 1:06.77.<\/p>\n

Meet organizers definitely understood just how successful Gunes has been this week as they immediately played Girl on Fire<\/em> by Alicia Keys<\/strong> after her win.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sophie Hansson<\/strong> finished second tonight in 1:07.77 with Great Britain’s Katie Matts<\/strong> earning third in 1:07.96.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Mariia Astashkina<\/strong> (1:08.12), Japan’s Runa Imai<\/strong> (1:08.13), Russia’s Daria Chikunova<\/strong> (1:09.03), Italy’s Giulia Verona<\/strong> (1:09.12) and Japan’s Yukino Miyasaka<\/strong> (1:09.27) also battled in the finale.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 fly semis<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA’s Michael Andrew<\/strong> nearly cracked the meet record in the men’s 50-meter fly semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Andrew, who already smoked the 50 back earlier in the evening for a win, set himself up for another gold with a 23.66 in semis.<\/p>\n

That swim just missed Daniel Bell’s<\/strong> meet record of 23.61 from 2008, but is well off Evgeny Sedov’s<\/strong> World Junior mark of 23.28 from the 2014 Russian Championships in Moscow.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong> qualified second in 23.77 with Russia’s Vladislav Kozlov<\/strong> (23.99) and Daniil Pakhomov<\/strong> (24.04) taking third and fourth.<\/p>\n

Spain’s Alberto Lozano<\/strong> (24.12), Croatia’s Bruno Blaskovic<\/strong> (24.25) and Poland’s Michal Chudy<\/strong> (24.25) also secured spots in the finale.<\/p>\n

Poland’s Pawel Sendyk<\/strong>, Brazil’s Vinicius Lanza<\/strong> and Australia’s\u00a0Brayden McCarthy<\/strong> set up an exciting three-way swimoff with matching times of 24.38 for the eighth spot in finals.<\/p>\n

Lanza won the swimoff in 24.06, while Sendyk (24.39) and McCarthy (24.41) missed the finals.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 free finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Tamsin Cook<\/strong>\u00a0clipped the meet record in the women’s 400-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Cook clocked a 4:06.17 for the gold, edging the 4:06.30 set by\u00a0Elena Sokolova<\/strong>\u00a0back in 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico.<\/p>\n

That time vaulted Cook from 19th in the world to 12th in the overall world rankings this year.<\/p>\n

She’s already the second-fastest 18-and-under behind the phenom\u00a0Katie Ledecky’s<\/strong>\u00a0world record of 3:59.13 from Worlds.<\/p>\n

USA’s\u00a0Sierra Schmidt<\/strong>\u00a0collected silver in a time of 4:07.47 with Italy’s\u00a0Linda Caponi<\/strong>\u00a0rounding out the podium with at third-place time of 4:07.73.<\/p>\n

USA’s\u00a0Hannah Cox<\/strong>\u00a0(4:08.69), Great Britain’s\u00a0Holly Hibbott<\/strong>\u00a0(4:11.29), China’s\u00a0Dong Fuwei<\/strong>\u00a0(4:11.32), Russia’s\u00a0Arina Openysheva<\/strong>\u00a0(4:11.54) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Chloe Finch<\/strong>\u00a0(4:12.73) finished fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 free finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia’s Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> emerged victorious in the men’s 50-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Chalmers raced his way to a 22.19 in the finale of the splash-and-dash, just missing Luke Percy’s<\/strong> meet record of 22.11 from 2013.<\/p>\n

Chalmers, already the second-ranked 18-and-under in the world this year, moved closer to Ziv Kalontatov’s<\/strong> 22.16 from the 2015 European Games with his time tonight.<\/p>\n

USA’s Michael Andrew<\/strong> just missed his 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record of 22.34 with a 22.36 for silver.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Giovanni Izzo<\/strong> placed third in 22.55 to round out the podium.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Felipe Souza<\/strong> (22.58) and Pedro Spajari<\/strong> (22.59) finished fourth and fifth just off the podium.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Oszkar Peter Lavotha<\/strong> (22.71), Turkey’s Huseyin Emre Sakci<\/strong> (22.79) and Russia’s Vladislav Kozlov<\/strong> (22.85) closed out the rest of the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes<\/strong> grabbed another World Junior record with a win in the women’s 200-meter IM at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Gunes hit the wall in 2:11.03 as she crushed the meet record of 2:12.32 set by Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>, and cleared her own World Junior mark of 2:11.46 from Worlds. That’s slower than the unratified World Junior mark of 2:10.12 by Zhou Min<\/strong> at the 2014 Chinese Nationals.<\/p>\n

Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey<\/strong> placed second in 2:12.37 with Great Britain’s Georgia Coates<\/strong> taking third in 2:12.74.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato<\/strong> (2:13.04), Japan’s Runa Imai<\/strong> (2:13.19), Japan’s Hiroko Makino<\/strong> (2:14.03), USA’s Tatum Wade<\/strong> (2:15.22) and USA’s Brooke Forde<\/strong> (2:15.68) also put up times in finals.<\/p>\n

Men’s 800 free relay finals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team USA crushed the World Junior record in the men’s 800-meter free relay at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

Grant Shoults, Maxime Rooney, Sean Grieshop<\/strong> and Grant House<\/strong> turned in a sizzling time of 7:13.76.<\/p>\n

That performance smashed the previous record of 7:15.36 set by Great Britain at the 2013 edition of the World Junior Championships with a foursome of Matthew Johnson, Max Litchfield, Caleb Hughes<\/strong> and James Guy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Australia’s Damian Fyfe, Clyde Lewis, Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> and Joshua Parrish<\/strong> finished second in 7:17.76.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Ernest Maskumov, Elisei Stepanov, Daniil Antipov<\/strong> and Aleksandr Prokofev<\/strong> claimed third in 7:19.45.<\/p>\n
