Coming off a runner-up finish at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship, SMU looks to continue its momentum and compete for the AAC crown in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs open their season on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611732\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Oct. 2<\/span><\/span> at the UNT Relays in Southlake, Texas, an event which features three-man relay teams. October also features a match-up with Metroplex rival TCU on the 28th in Fort Worth.<\/p>\n<p>A pair of events highlight the month of November, as dual-meet action with LSU takes place on<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611733\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Nov. 7<\/span><\/span>, and the Texas A&amp;M Invite is set for <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611734\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Nov. 19-21<\/span><\/span>. The Tigers finished ninth at the SEC Championship last season and went on to send one relay, an individual participant and a diver to the NCAA Championship.<\/p>\n<p>It is the SMU divers who begin the 2016 portion of the schedule, competing at the Georgia Diving Invite in Athens <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611735\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Jan. 3-5<\/span><\/span>. Swimmers resume action in the new year on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611736\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Jan. 12<\/span><\/span> as they travel to take on in-state foe Incarnate word in San Antonio. January also features the highly competitive Austin Grand Prix, a three-day event taking place the 14-16, as well as dual action at Texas A&amp;M <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611737\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Jan. 29<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>SMU&#8217;s final tune-up before championship season takes place on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611738\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Feb. 6<\/span><\/span>, as the Mustangs host a pre-conference time trial event in Mansfield, which includes teams from UNT and Oklahoma Baptist.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship takes place <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611739\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Feb. 17-20<\/span><\/span> in Houston, and the NCAA Championship is slated for <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611740\"><span class=\"aQJ\">March 24-26<\/span><\/span> in Atlanta. Zone diving qualifications for the NCAA meet are scheduled for <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611741\"><span class=\"aQJ\">March 7-9<\/span><\/span> in College Station.<\/p>\n<p>A season ago, SMU finished second at The American Championship, with three Mustangs earning individual accolades.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smumustangs.com\/sports\/m-swim\/mtt\/christian_scherubl_926424.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #eb2f27;\">Christian Scherubl<\/span><\/a> was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet in his first season,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smumustangs.com\/sports\/m-swim\/mtt\/devin_burnett_786042.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #eb2f27;\">Devin Burnett<\/span><\/a>\u00a0earned Most Valuable Diver honors, after winning all three events, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smumustangs.com\/sports\/m-swim\/mtt\/jim_stillson_207915.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #eb2f27;\">Jim Stillson<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was named the men&#8217;s Diving Coach of the Year. SMU also broke four meet records at the event, with Scherubl breaking the school&#8217;s 500 free record in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to NCAA Championship action, the Mustangs will compete at the American Short Course Championship in Austin <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611742\"><span class=\"aQJ\">March 3-5<\/span><\/span>, and following the championship season, select Ponies will travel to Mesa, Arizona, for the Mesa Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>The annual alumni meet will kick things off during SMU&#8217;s Homecoming weekend, beginning at <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611743\"><span class=\"aQJ\">10 a.m. CT<\/span><\/span> on <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1499611744\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sept. 26<\/span><\/span>.
