COLUMBIA University\u2019s Cristina Teuscher, the NCAA champion in the 400m freestyle (4:04.09) and 400m individual medley (4:33.81)\u2014each the second fastest times in the world this year\u2014has been named winner of the Honda-Broderick Cup, presented annually to the nation\u2019s outstanding woman athlete and selected by a national vote involving more than 900 NCAA-member schools.<\/p>\n
Teuscher is the first swimmer in 13 years to win the award and the fourth swimmer so honored, joining California\u2019s Mary T. Meagher (1987), Florida\u2019s Tracy Caulkins (1982 and 1984), and Jill Sterkel (1981) of Texas.<\/p>\n
The announcement and presentation were made at the 24th annual Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Dinner, Monday, June 12 at Orlando, Fla., site of the 2000 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Conference.<\/p>\n
Teuscher, a senior from New Rochelle, NY, was undefeated in nine meets this year. She was the Ivy League champ[ion in the 200 and 400 IM, as well as the 100 free, in which she set a school record. Teuscher was named Outstanding Swimmer of the Ivy League Championships for the fourth consecutive year. The holder of 10 of 14 school individual records and four relay team records, Teuscher never lost an individual race in her four-year college career. She was an Ivy League All-Academic selection and maintains a 3.4 GPA as a psychology major. She earned a gold medal in the 800 meter freestyle relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and is training for the 2000 Games in Sydney.<\/p>\n
The Honda-Broderick Cup is the top honor given women collegiate athletes. The winner reflects not only individual athletic achievements, but also embodies the ideals of team contribution, scholastic endeavor, school and community involvement, and those personal characteristics that are reflected in the philosophy of intercollegiate athletics.<\/p>\n
