{"id":150968,"date":"2015-08-20T09:35:47","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T16:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=150968"},"modified":"2015-08-20T09:35:47","modified_gmt":"2015-08-20T16:35:47","slug":"katie-ledecky-world-championship-gold-medals-today-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-world-championship-gold-medals-today-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Katie Ledecky Brings World Championship Gold Medals to &#8220;Today&#8221; Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> stopped by Rockefeller Plaza in New York City today for her first Stateside interview after what most would call a stellar week at the FINA world championships in Russia, talking with <strong>Matt Lauer<\/strong> on the \u201cToday\u201d show on NBC.<\/p>\n<p>Right out of the gate, Ledecky downplayed her performances, saying \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say (the races were) perfect, but it was pretty the best week I could have asked for.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative; padding-bottom:63%; padding-bottom:-webkit-calc(56.25% + 50px); padding-bottom:calc(56.25% + 50px); height: 0;\"><iframe style=\"position:absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/offsite\/olympic-swimmer-katie-ledecky-im-enjoying-working-hard-509341763962\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Ledecky became the first person to win the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles in one world championship meet and set world records in the 800 and 1500. She left the meet with five gold medals, the most of anyone at the meet and one of the highest tallies of any female at a world championships.<\/p>\n<p>Now she\u2019s back home getting ready for the push toward the Rio Olympics, where she could be the second woman after <strong>Debbie Meyer<\/strong> in 1968 to win the 200, 400 and 800 in one Olympic Games. (There is no 1500 free for women in the Olympics, an omission that continues to irk swimmers, coaches and fans.) <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not every day you can say you\u2019ve done something nobody\u2019s done before,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI\u2019ve been enjoying it, and at the same time, looking forward to this next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauer brought up the topic of Ledecky\u2019s stamina in the sport, and whether she can continue to put in the grueling amount of time that distance swimmers need to be at their best. At 18 years old, she could have a career that lasts 10 more years. The woman she\u2019s succeeding as the queen of distance swimming, <strong>Janet Evans<\/strong>, was 24 years old when she swam in her final Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at new ways I can improve with my coach, <strong>Bruce Gemmell<\/strong>,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI hope I can continue to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before speaking with Lauer inside the studio, Ledecky was outside among cheering fans and talked with <strong>Angie Goff<\/strong> from NBC affiliate WRC in Ledecky\u2019s hometown of Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script>(function(d, s, id) {  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
