After posting the fastest time in the world this year in each of his three events in successive nights at U.S. Nationals in San Antonio, Michael Phelps<\/b> returned to the pool to swim in arguably his worst event, the 200 breast. Swimming from lane one in the second of three circle-seeded heats, Phelps finished second behind Scotland’s Craig Benson<\/b> in 2:12.68, good for the sixth best qualifying time into the final.<\/p>\n
After the race, Phelps explained that he had no real race plan since he hardly ever competes in the event, and he then assessed his splits and his final time in the race. Phelps discussed a deal he made with his coach, Bob Bowman<\/b> about whether or not he would compete in the event again this evening or scratch based on his result in the morning.<\/p>\n
