MONTREAL, May 30. EVERYTHING went according to form tonight at the Piscine Olympique in Montreal during the third evening of the Canadian Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
Kelly Stefanyshyn and Michelle Lischinsky went one-two in the women's 100 meter backstroke, just as they did in prelims and semi-finals. Each time they swam they both went a little faster with the 17-year-old Stefanyshyn triumphing tonight in 1:02.66 to her 25-year-old rival's 1:02.89. Erin Gammel who led by more than half a second at the 50 (30.53) faded to third (1:03.12).<\/p>\n
Chris Renaud and Merk Versfeld made it a two-man race in the men's 100m backstroke, with Renaud touching first in 55.88 to Versfeld's 56.39, reversing the order of finish in the semis, where Versfeld went 55.84 to Renaud's 56.15.<\/p>\n
Rick Say, winner of the 400m free on the first night in 3:49.99, won the 200 tonight in 1:49.19. Say was out in 53.21, back in 55.98. Brian Johns was second in 1:50.34.<\/p>\n
Rhiannon Leier took the women's 100m breast, improving on her semi final time to win in 1:09.71. Christen Petelski was close behind in 1:09.97.<\/p>\n
In semi-final action, Jessica Deglau, who finished a disappointing fourth last night in the 100 fly, led all qualifiers in the 200m free in 2:00.56.<\/p>\n
Joanne Malar, winner of the 400m IM, swam the fastest 200 medley, with a very strong time of 2:14.55. It was her 38.30 breaststroke leg that allowed her to qualify ahead of her perennial rival, Marianne Limpert, at 2:15.20.<\/p>\n
