DENVER, Colorado, June 18. THREE-time Division I All-American and 1995 Colorado State high school diving champion Erik Cook will become the new head diving coach at the University of Denver, head coach Brian Schrader announced today. Cook, who is currently the head diving coach at Cherry Creek High School, takes over for former diving coach Jeff Carter.<\/p>\n
"We are excited to have Erik as a part of our staff. I think he will continue to build our diving program off of the solid foundation that Jeff Carter started and help our entire team continue to improve in the Sun Belt Conference and nationally," Schrader said. "Erik knows what it means to compete at a very elite level and has a reputation as a great teacher, which is a great combination when you want to help people achieve their potential."<\/p>\n
Cook was a scholarship student-athlete at the University of Nebraska and won a Big 12 conference championship on the 1 meter springboard in 2000. A three-time Division I All-American, he was named All-Big 12 conference in 2000 and Big 12 Diver of the Month for January of 2000. Placing as high as fourth at senior nationals, Cook became a member of the U.S. Diving National Team and helped the team to a third place finish in the 1999 World University Games by finishing 18th.<\/p>\n
Before taking his diving to Nebraska, Cook was a five-time letterwinner as a high school athlete at Overland High School in Aurora, Colo. In 1995, he was the Centennial League diving champion and followed it up with a state championship. He was also a NISCA All-America honorable mention, and still holds both the 6 and 11 dive school records at Overland.<\/p>\n
Cook began his coaching career in 2002 as the head diving coach at Cherry Creek High School, where he has presided over a pair of Centennial League champions and two school record holders. Cook coached divers to numerous high state finishes, including a runner-up in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, he took over the DU Hilltoppers team, helping three divers compete at West Nationals and one all the way to Summer Junior Nationals.<\/p>\n
